Free Choice for Workers: A History of the Right to Work Movement, by George C. Leef

This is a captivating chronicle of the fifty-year "David-Goliath" struggle between the bosses of Big Labor and Americans opposed to their coercive power.Few Americans realize their freedom to say "no" to compulsory unionism is largely the result of the valiant efforts of the National Right to Work Committee and its Legal Defense Foundation. Big business and the Republican Party have usually avoided the battle, leaving only Right to Work and its hundreds of thousands of grass roots supporters to defend employee freedom to get or keep their jobs without being forced to pay dues or join a union.Leef's narrative covers the New Deal legislation that gave Big Labor its initial monopoly power, and then the inspiring, decades-long struggle in Washington and the states to reduce the abusive power of labor bosses. The book also teaches a crucial lesson for those involved in public policy wars, regardless of their political philosophy -- that principled and dedicated idealists can prevail against strong special interest groups if they fight for a just cause.

The invisible powerhouse
By Andrew S. Rogers
In all his many decades of contributions to economics and social science, Nobel laureate F.A. Hayek never wrote truer words than these: "It cannot be stressed enough that the coercion which unions have been permitted to exercise contrary to all principles of freedom under the law is primarily the coercion of fellow workers." The story of how that coercion was imposed on American workers -- and how workers have tried to recapture and restore those rights -- is the focus of this excellent and much-needed book by George Leef.

Right to Work occupies an anomalous position in American life. On the one hand, Americans overwhelmingly endorse the idea that no one should be compelled to join or support a labor union in order to get or keep a job. On the other, the fight to advance that principle tends to take place in relative obscurity. That makes the National Right to Work Committee, the focus of Leef's book, both one of America's most important political organizations, and one of its least well known.

To the extent it is well-known, the National Right to Work Committee is often thought of as part of the American conservative movement. But as Leef makes clear, this is more an effect than a cause. Linda Chavez demonstrated in her 2004 book Betrayal: How Union Bosses Shake Down Their Members and Corrupt American Politics how the American Left is bought and paid for by Big Labor. From the standpoint of practical politics, therefore, opposing union-boss coercion often becomes a "conservative" position. Despite Big Labor propaganda, Right to Work is neither a corporate front nor an anti-worker position. In recounting the history of the Committee and the fight against forced unionism, Leef shows that Big Business has been, at best, AWOL. More often, it has sided with the union bosses' strong-arm tactics in pursuit of the shameful lie of "industrial peace." In fact, the fight has been led by heroic union members, small employers, and other principled individuals. The price some of them have had to pay for their principles -- up to and including death at the hands of union thugs -- is a sobering fact that many Americans may, yet again, not be aware of.

"Free Choice for Workers" is a fascinating look at American labor history. But it's also a revealing peek inside a most effective political organization. Some of the political pelts hanging on the Right to Work trophy wall include not only the defeat of common-situs picketing in the 1970s and the Pushbutton Strike Bill in the 1990s, but also the electoral defeat of Big Labor puppets like former U.S. senators Gail McGee and Al Gore, Sr. Additionally, as Leef explains, the National Right to Work Committee pioneered the use of direct mail (the cornerstone of the modern conservative movement) for mobilization and fundraising. Similarly, the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation was "the first conservative nonprofit legal aid organization and it blazed the trail for the entire conservative litigation movement" (p. 149). I'd bet few "movement conservatives" realize quite how much they owe to Right to Work heroes like Reed Larson.

Finally, "Free Choice for Workers" is a disturbing study of how the Left works year after year, decade after decade, to restrict the rights of employers, property owners, and working men and women. Their language of "solidarity" and "collective security" comes straight out of the socialist hymnal. But their true objective is expanding their own empire of wealth and power. George Leef has given us yet more proof of just how far down Hayek's road to serfdom America has already traveled.

If turning the country around can be achieved through political action (a debateable question, though outside the scope of this book), success or failure will have a lot to do with the success or failure of the Right to Work movement. And that makes this book a very important one indeed.

Right-to-Work-for-Less
By SD Cleveland
Yes! A free choice! Even if that freedom includes losing your rights to 31% of your pay and benefits! (Source: Bureau of Labor & Statistics). Right-to-work-for-less is naked legislation funded by billionaire plutocrats to disenfranchise American families from the system of wealth creation which they play an integral roll in sustaining. The recent Michigan and Wisconsin heists have proven only to have awakened a sleeping giant in the class-war against American families. A war funded by Astroturf groups like the Koch brothers' Freedom Works and Americans for Prosperity. The Koch family has a long history in the bigoted, Conservative, segregationist group The John Birch Society. (Sources: Forbes Magazine - Forbes 400 Richest People in America - 30th Anniv Edition (Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, etc) In 1964 affiliation with The John Birch Society is what lead Barry Goldwater to the most humiliating Republican defeats in Presidential electoral history.

The mere fact that most Right-to-Work laws are snuck through their respective state's legislative systems in violation even of court orders, is a sure sign that Conservatives don't want Democracy involved in the law making process. On December 12th, 2012, the fascist style tactics were enough to have Michigan State senator Brandon Dillon proclaim,

"Good ideas get debated, bad ones get rammed through, with police protection, during lame-duck sessions."

This book, in fact, was published by a leading think-tank on radical conservative propaganda; The John William Pope Foundation, whose leaders include a who's who of radical right-wingers.

- Alan Kors, who writes pieces for both libertarian and conservative journals on political matters. (Source: Reason magazine)
- Abigail Thernstrom,[1] a conservative political scientist. (Source: Official Biography from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights)

The radical Right-wing agenda of Right-to-Work advocates has been historically touched on by their fellow Republicans moderates in the book Rule and Ruin: The Downfall of Moderation and the Destruction of the Republican Party, From Eisenhower to the Tea Party (Studies in Postwar American Political Development),

"A fanatical neo-facsist political cult of right-wingers in the GOP, driven by a strange mixture of corrosive hatred and sickening fear that is recklessly determined to control our party or destroy it!" - Republican Senator Thomas Kuchel 1966.

In a far more well received and groundbreaking book, Confessions of a Union Buster Martin Levitt, one of the most prolific union busters of the 1970's and 80's explains the mob-like tactics routinely exercised by his industry. Vandalism of cars, threats of bodily harm, nefarious lies spread about infidelity of union organizers, obstructionism, fraud and negligent misrepresentation are standard hallmarks of union-busting "labor consulting firms". How is this all allowed to take place so easily and undetected by the government? Whereas regulations like the Taft-Hartley Act of 1946 and the Landrum-Griffith Act of 1959 simultaneously make the process both completely transparent and thereby shackle union organization, there are NO regulations in place controlling "labor consulting firms". While robbing millions of Americans of the essentials for the dignity of a living wage, corporate conglomerates spend millions of dollars every year to lavish union busters with life-styles of excess including - as Levitt explains and admits to himself - prostitutes, a brand new flag-ship car every year, all expense paid trips to sunny beaches, and none-stop rivers of booze, drugs and excess.

Shall I bring up the crimes committed against union workers for simply exercising their freedom of association under The Constitution? The book History of American Labor exposes an American history scarred with the thalidomide of wealthy business owners and robber-barons killing their employees in the name of profit.

After scores died in previous years while toiling under dangerous conditions at The Homestead Steal-mill, finally, in June of 1892 workers responded by locking themselves in to protest the abysmal working conditions. William Frick - under the blessing of Andrew Carnegie, owner of the mill - called in The Pinkerton Security squad who abruptly opened fire on the unarmed workers, killing 9 and wounding 12 more.

The murderous rampage of business owners didn't stop there. It continued with:

1897 The Lattimer Massacre: 19 unarmed striking immigrant killed
1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire: 146 garment workers, mostly women, killed.
1912 Lawrence Textile Strike: 1 woman shot
1914 The Ludlow Massacre: 19-25 unarmed strikers and their families killed (including 2 women and 11 children)
1915 Williams & Clark Fertilizing Company Massacre: 1 unarmed striker killed and 20 more injured
1917 The hanging of union organizer, Frank Little
1917 Bisbee Deportation, some 1,300 striking Arizona mine workers were deported from their community at rifle point
1920 Anaconda Road Massacre: 1 dead 16 injured by gun-fire
1927 The Columbine Massacre: 6 unarmed men machine-guned to death

In my opinion, only the purist of idiots would read Free Choice for Workers and believe in the merits of "Right-to-Work-for-Less". An unfortunately receptive population of the gullible await. This book is garbage and a cancer to true Freedom and Liberty in the USA. It's no surprise that this book has tanked so badly that before I left mine, it only had one review. The author should be tried for sedition! The veil of propaganda has been pulled from the face of corporate rent-seeking legislation to reveal the head of a Medusa and her name is "Right-to-Work".

Bildungsroman fantasy that gets in your head...
By Blanca Welsh
Admittingly, this book is much different from fantasy I usually read. It's more of a bildungsroman fantasy genre book. By those not familiar with that way of storytelling, it deals with a main character going through a psychological journey, moral growth or both, who for the most part will experience new things and look for answers to new questions as they experience them.

Most times, the main character's strongest conflict is with the values of their society.

It's more literary fiction than say, Lord of The Rings.

With that being said, it's a really interesting book that addresses Gender, Sexuality and explores Polyamourous relationships.

Everything sets into motion when Ariah, the titular character, is set on a journey to apprentice with a mentor who can help him navigate his magic.

Ariah is a mimic and closeted shaper. He can draw out emotions and shape them or in turn feel them himself. Sometimes it was confusing for him, especially when he's forced to follow his mentor Dirva, to Dirva's hometown.

Some of the racial politics were a tad confusing. There were different races of elves, then there were Qin which I think were human? I didn't really read a ton of fantasy books with elves growing up, so maybe I'm missing an unspoken system for different colors/species elves fall under. Sometimes the book didn't always stop to explain it, just expecting me to know. It wasn't a deal breaker, I just didn't follow every detail, so when it came back, I was confused again.

I'm a bit ashamed to say that based on the cover and his description, I cannoned him white. If I'm not mistaken he's not white, but I think I would've taken something different from him if I'd known before I finished the book. Especially because more than a few of his love interests were Black, and I'm all about that Blasian. That's the main reason I would've taken something different from it. Blasian depictions are so rare it's embarrassing.

That kind of info will have me live tweeting as I read, telling everyone I know, and tagging it like crazy on social media. Like I said, I'm all about that Blasian.

It also highlights polyamourous relationships, which sadly get a bad rap based on monogamous relationships being the greater majority. Ariah came into his own sexuality, but I was a little disappointed that the thought of sleeping with a dude wasn't appealing to him, even though he was in love with Sorcha, one of his main love interests. He slept with women on the drop of a hat. As he came into himself, I wondered why(without giving a spoiler alert, which is really hard to do because it's so relevant!) Sorcha had to showcase femininity to justify his attraction to him.

But I'm glad it's actually addressing polyamorous relationships. I think when I was young, I used to think monogamy was the only answer, but educating myself on the subject, I see that 5+4 and 6+3 can both bring the same answer. Books like to paint the idea that there is only one person you're allowed to be in love with. I should be clear, that Ariah did not experience a love triangle. He had multiple love interests. At least two of the main people he was in love with were also(or at least how I saw it) in love with other people, and each love was valid.

But the topic of Gender came up in a better "even a fool should be learning something from this" kind of way. Ariah, much like most people in our society don't know how to address folks who don't identify as He or She. I'm learning myself to not automatically attach gender without first asking what a person prefers(really hard with a grocery cashier btw) and Ariah lived in a bubble where other pronouns were used.

It confused him to be surrounded by non-binary or those who chose not to adhere to a gender at all(cuz there's literally like a million XD). I'm sure there are more books that address this, but this just happens to be the first book I've read that addressed Gender Diversity. I look forward to finding more, as long as they're done with the same amount of respect as this book.

I wish Ariah would've been described more. I feel like a jerk for seeing him as a white dude.

And on a much less serious note, what was Ariah smoking every other chapter?

Ariah stayed gettin' high. He was supposed to be training, and it affected his training, yet he stayed smoking an L XD

Wonderful Journey
By K.C. Gray
When I first started reading this, I thought I'd wind up giving it three stars. There are some issues with repetition throughout the text, but for some reason it came across as more prevelant, and therefore more distracting, in the beginning of the novel. For example, a description of characters was written like:

"They looked nothing alike. I saw absolutely no family resemblance."

Many of the descriptions came across like this, and in the beginning, they felt unnecessary.

Also, there were descriptions that, if added, would have heightened my sense of immersion into the story. For instance, I thought the main character was female for the first few pages. I also had a great deal of trouble imagining the city and the train, so I went to default human buildings, which didn't seem to match the characters.

And then, as I continued reading, the rating in my mind went up one star. Despite repetitious statements, the prose is smooth and easy to follow. I was fully immersed at some places, and can still imagine these scenes vividly.

Along with these positives, I came across beautiful imagery and wordings, like:

"The sun sat low on the horizon, bloody and wounded."

"Black skin that drank in the light."

"The image of her profile silhouetted against the flickering orange light is burned into my mind, a fixed point in time. It's one of those indelible memories that serves to organize a remembered life."

There is so much from this book that will stick with me.

The main focus of the story is not a villain or saving another person (the main character does get saved on many occasions, and on many more he saves others), but it's more about the character's growth. The main character, Ariah, is prime and proper, unsure of himself, but as the book continues, he goes on many adventures and finds himself in the process. In other words, the more Ariah experience, the more he realized what he did and did not like.

The author handles the character growth in a brilliant way. Ariah isn't stuck in one place, learning who he is. He travels all over the "country", lands in new settings, around different types of people, and it's these new experiences that causes him to look at the world a different way. In many of these adventures, there is danger and that need to continue reading to find out what happens, but these things are not the focus of this novel.

In some ways, this reminded me of Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness. There is an exploration of sexuality, and many of the characters come across as gender fluid

In the end, I wound up with a solid five stars on my mind. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Ariah went on, and when it was over, I felt overwhelming sadness.

Ariah's journey resonated with me on a personal level, and I loved that in the end he knew himself so well that he left comforts and took one final trip back to those he loved.

Lush fantasy
By L. R. Richardson
Ariah is a coming of age tale of a young elf named Ariah. He learns from a mentor, travels to different lands, does a few different jobs, and tries to find out what he actually wants out of life and how and who he wants to love. There are numerous different coloured elves in this world, and there’s a complicated political system between them all. Ariah is marginalised, having to hide certain powers he possesses and only able to work certain jobs.

This is not a fast-paced, action-heavy fantasy. Rather, it is pensive and takes its time unfurling. The plot is a bit meandering, perhaps—there’s not a very clear overall arc other than Ariah finding himself, and sometimes it can jump a few years. The book examines gender and sexuality in numerous ways, as different elves have different gender structures, marriage rites and practices, and more. There are several nonbinary characters, and the book is written by a genderqueer author. The prose is crisp and beautiful. Pick up if you like lush fantasy that takes its time exploring the world and the characters.

Life Never Ends Well: A Cavalcade of Murders, Suicides, Accidental Deaths, & Tra, by Jim Goad

In painstaking and often painfully funny detail, this book focuses on 500 cases where people died in ironic, unusual, or outright horrifying ways. Whether they died on roller coasters, in wood chippers, by shark bite, answering a Craigslist ad, while texting, in the course of masturbating, or simply because they laughed too hard, this book ties them all together in one big bloody red ribbon. You’ll read about severed penises, concert tragedies, kids who killed their parents, moms who killed their kids, women who murdered their husbands, couples who killed for fun, and felonious Santa Clauses. As this book illustrates in lurid detail, death is never fun—but it doesn’t have to be boring.

Weird, Hilarious and Sometimes Sad...
By melodylee1313
You can find odd stories of death by prosthetic limb, wood chipper, sex, roller coaster, etc. online, but then they wouldn't have the hilarious commentary by Jim Goad. His spin on the chapter about wives (overwhelmingly Asian wives) severing their philandering husbands' pee pees had me in stitches.

Retrograde by Bailey Bradford

Book eleven in the Southwestern Shifters series

Letting go of the past to embrace the future…

Things are changing for Marcus and Nathan, in more ways than one. Nathan is still trying to deal with the action he took in order to save Marcus’ life. It isn’t easy to do, and sometimes he fears he’ll give in to all the doubts and fears plaguing him.

What they need is some time alone, without guards shadowing their every move, no one to interrupt. Because soon, they’ll be busier than ever.

A short vacation before the annual gathering of Alpha Anaxes at the compound, that’s what they decide to do. But their vacation isn’t so private when they discover a wild pack of young shifters barely surviving.

Changes are coming.

A strange young shifter with abilities neither Marcus nor Nathan have ever seen before. Alpha Anaxes and attitudes. An intruder in their midst. And with the help of Shania, the pack doctor, the most important event of Marcus and Nathan’s shared life is about to happen.

Changes are coming, and they’re coming fast.

The Southwestern Shifters series

There are many reasons to visit the beautiful Southwest, a land of mystery, magic and mayhem—and shifters.

Sometimes a wolf is just a wolf…except when it's more. Shifters roam the Southwest, in packs and alone, struggling to survive. When it's discovered, by one wounded outcast, that gay shifters also have destined mates, the shifter world is forced to rethink its beliefs. A change in the shifter hierarchy is shaking up the packs, making new rules and forcing the shifters' archaic ways out the door. For some, the changes may come too late; their faith in their fellow shifters has been shattered.

For others, the changes are embraced with open minds and hearts—and a hope that burns deep inside. To be accepted, part of the pack, instead of living with the threat of being shunned for their sexual preferences—many shifters are free for the first time. They have the hope of finding their destined mates, men who fill the emptiness in their souls.

But not everyone in the shifter world is willing to accept the changes, destined mates or not. They don't want their ways to change, and they will do anything, no matter how evil, to keep the packs under their power.

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!!
By Angela S Goodrich
It’s no secret that I love the Southwestern Shifters series and loved that I got to gorge myself on the series in August. So you won’t be shocked to learn that I was beyond thrilled when I found out about Retrograde’s release and I nearly went through the roof when I discovered that Bradford had written it as another chapter in Marcus and Nathan’s life. I love all of the couples in the series and each has a special place in my heart, but with all the Nathan has dealt with as Marcus was under attack from more than one quarter, it felt right for them to get another installment in the series and Bradford managed to make me love this couple even more than I already did.

Because of assassination attempts and challenges for Marcus’s position, Nathan has been on edge for a while and having to kill another individual (even one who was bad) in order to save Marcus’s life makes that edge even finer. It’s not that Nathan regrets saving Marcus’s life or even that he killed to do so, but rather that he was forced to take another’s life. Having been raised by a human, Nathan still finds the easy acceptance of violence among shifters too much to bear at times. Sensing that his mate needs to get away and realizing that they need a chance to reinforce their bond before an upcoming conference of the Alpha Anaxes, Marcus makes arrangements for a short getaway for just the two of them. Having the chance to let their wolves run free in a safe environment that’s not fenced in, to spend time alone with just the two of them, and to connect sexually on a more primal level does wonders for both men. Yet even on vacation they can’t seem to get away from the needs of other wolves when they discover a wild pack of young shifters who know nothing about the shifter society. Thank goodness Marcus and Nathan know of a wolf who loves to take in strays – Gabe. But when demands of Marcus’s position require that they return to the compound, they are once again faced with treachery when another plot to take out an AA is discovered. For once, Marcus wasn’t the target but because it was being attempted in his home it affected him no less. Thankfully Marcus has a pack filled with loyal and intelligent shifters who were able to help thwart yet another assassination attempt and strengthen ties with other honorable AAs.

Retrograde was another excellent addition to the Southwestern Shifters series. I loved watching Nathan and Marcus get back to nature so to speak and embrace their wolf so fully. It was obvious it did them good mentally, but it also made for some smoking hot sex scenes. They were lucky they didn’t start a forest fire with as hot as they got. I liked that Bradford made another AA the target in this novel and that for once Marcus didn’t have the bullseye on his back. I found his handling of the territory situation to be very telling of the kind of man Marcus is – a good man who only wants what’s best for all shifters. I loved meeting Lexxie and hope to see more of her in the future and learning more about her heritage. That Bradford foreshadowed the changes that are coming for Marcus and his pack made me so freaking happy because that means more books are in the future. But the end. Oh my word was the end sweet. I mean… We’ve got puppies!

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Things are changing and they’re coming fast, what Marcus and Nathan needs is some time alone to decide what to do but their private vacation is interrupted when they discover a pack of young shifters barely surviving in this gripping paranormal romance. There was no way that I could stop reading this story once I began because the story is chock full of emotional turmoil, excitement and passion all involving one of my favorite couples, Marcus and Nathan, and I have to tell you I can’t wait to find out what happens next with all those changes and of course that important event will be the most exciting for them in the years to come.
