This books a lifesaver on a few seemingly easy repairs.

Well maybe it's not saving a life as much as my sanity. We recently bought a 1920s home and just not quite sure where to begin. Well we quickly learned a few things about hanging nails on lathe and plaster. It's not fun but at least I now know a few things before I hang out new school pictures. I'm finding many of the "easy repairs" are explained in detail in this book and make the house seem more doable. Especially our double sash Windows. We originally were going to rip out and replace but I think we've changed our minds on that now. We will have the wood floors done professionally. I don't feel overly competent. I love the step by step instructions in this book. By he author is straight forward and shares his mistakes. I really like that he does that. I'm only Lessing by one star because I did expect a little more information. I'd love to see it revised. But for a starter book it's a must read.

Fantastic book for "old home" owners.

This was very fast and interesting read, with extremely useful advice and lots of links to related websites to help restore your "old home." As a new owner of an "old home," I felt that the book offered the right amount of encouragement and positive inspiration to help me get going on restoring the home and put me in the right frame of mind/gave me a better perspective on dealing with living in and restoring an old home (in my case, an 1860's American Italianate-style home). Fantastic read and highly recommended.

It is an excellent reference guide if you own or plan on owning an old home. I am always picking it up for pointers or referring to the book for help with a project. It will be completely worn out by the time I am finished restoring this old place.

…aspects of this book are gems and I felt almost driven to want to develop a course which might be based on sections of it…the authors show deep knowledge of and empathy for their material. It is fascinating and close to inspirational…the experiments are the crowning glory and make the book worth every penny for the university teacher of light and optics. This is brilliant stuff.

Explores optics, stimulates interest, sharpens brain

The book by T. Rossing and C. Chiaverina is written in a profoundly elegant manner. The authors introduce the phenomena of light and colors, reflection and refraction, interference and diffraction, polarization, light sources and spectra, holography and photography, computer images and optical storages, as well as symmetry in art and nature. It is not only a textbook of contemporary optics for a one-semester undergraduate course, but it is also helpful for industry engineers working in the optical area, college professors, and physicists. Compared to most textbooks, this book has four distinct characteristics. (1) The book emphasizes the phenomena and experiments of light rather than the mathematical theories of light. (2) It includes wide fields, from geometric optics (mirror, lens) to physical optics (slit, grating) and from quantum optics (laser, spectrum) to the symmetry, and connects them. (3) It discusses the intrinsic properties of optics and the combination of art and nature. Young students can obtain the fundamental optical concept as well as the sophisticated philosophic idea. (4) Most importantly, it stimulates the interest of the readers to explore more contents of optical phenomena and theories. My daughter, a college student, said, ¡°I learned many things, having fun at the same time¡±.

Wonderful Resource for All Science Teachers

Light isn't just about electromagnetic waves - it is about human perception of those waves. This book is a wonderful resource for all teachers, and an easy and pleasurable bed-time read as well. It accurately and simply presents the pure physics of light and color and then relates it to our perception of that light and color. However, as a resource for teachers, it also provides numerous hands-on experiments suitable for students at many different levels. I'm using the polarization experiments with my high school classes at the moment. The demo using a CD as a diffraction grating is awesome, even if you don't want to explain how it works. This book is my constant companion in my effort to share "Light Science" with my students.

I have used Light Science as a reference to teach an introductory optics course to middle school students. The chapters are easy to read and full of real-life examples. Each chapter concludes with quick, inexpensive experiments relating to the topic. Most experiments cost only a few dollars and use common household items. Students are excited to see the mysteries of light unfold. Lively discussions result from experiments that they can easily perform, bringing further emphasis to the topic. Light Science is in an invaluable resource for the teaching of Physical Science.

About the Author
Georgette Todd has a BA in English and Journalism, attended law school and has a MFA in English, Non-Fiction Creative Writing from Mills College. Her writing has been featured on National Public Radio, in San Francisco Chronicle, San Diego Union-Tribune, Sacramento News & Review and other publications. Wow great book! A must read for anyone working with youth in any capacity especially at risk youth. This story will touch you and shock you. It gives you an astonishing picture of what it's like to grow up in the foster care system. Any person who has any kind of contact with the foster care system in any capacity must read this book. It will improve how you work with youth in any situation.

Not for the faint of heart.

Compelling, a sad story with parts to it that may be too hard for people to bear. At the end though, it helps you to reflect on your own life and come to the realization that no matter what you go through, nothing can destroy you.

Raw, honest and insightful - I couldn't put it down

This is a remarkable book. It's a very raw, brutally honest, and incredibly thoughtful and insightful memoir of Todd's time inside the US foster care system. I loved her voice - at turns vulnerable, confessional, strong, defiant, and spirited. She has endured some really terrible things and while they might be difficult to read, they only serve to better help you understand the depth of her strength, and appreciate how much she truly has accomplished. It's a brave piece of writing from a personal standpoint, and an important piece of writing in terms of how we understand the foster system - a system that essentially punishes children not for doing bad things, but for having bad things done to them. As someone who has lived through the system, and subsequently gone on to work within it and work to reform it, Todd's perspective is about as well-rounded as you're going to get. I knew very little about the foster care system when I picked up this book, and it stuck with me. A real eye-opener.

About the Author
Monique Craig is a hoof researcher, farrier, consultant to farriers, rider, author, and founder of EponaTech (www.Metron-Imaging.com) and EponaShoe (www.EponaShoe.com) and the Epona-Institute (www.Epona-Institute.org). She has a BS in Computer Science Engineering, formerly studied art and won sculpture awards, and now gives seminars and lectures on the hoof, trimming, shoeing and equine biomechanics. She has published several papers related to the hoof and soundness, and gives lectures at the college level in hoof biomechanics. A tri-lingual native of Switzerland, she became a US citizen in 2001.

The Science and art of Hoofcare- in a digestible delivery

A Detailed manual for Hoofcare providers- clear, concise diagrams, photos, xrays and descriptions- in layman's terms. The documented case studies are a testament that the Epona System not only has immediate benefits, but long term improvements to soundness and function of the hoof. Alot of information is in this manual- alot of content- delivered in a sequential presentation. This would be a reference text to get in Hardcopy for easy review (pics, xrays) and bookmarks. A LOT of content.

This is a really interesting book with a lot of content. Definitely not the same stuff that
you see over and over again in other books on the hoof. It has helped to sharpen my eye, and
now I'm looking at horse's feet in a new light! Great book!

Top notch hoof care textbook!

I have a range of hoof care textbooks and have to say this is by far the top of the list. I have yet to find a textbook that is as detailed while still engaging and enjoyable to read. My eyes don't glaze over. I'm excited to turn the page and feel that I'm retaining all of the information presented. I've taken courses that present similar information in a 3 to 5-day format but have not received a textbook that goes along with those courses. This is that book! Hats off to Monique Craig. Very happy with this purchase.
