American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition: A Novel, by Neil Gaiman

First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classic—an intellectual and artistic benchmark from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman. Now discover the mystery and magic of American Gods in this tenth anniversary edition. Newly updated and expanded with the author’s preferred text, this commemorative volume is a true celebration of a modern masterpiece by the one, the only, Neil Gaiman.

A storm is coming . . .

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined—it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distills the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations.

Amazon.com Review
American Gods is Neil Gaiman's best and most ambitious novel yet, a scary, strange, and hallucinogenic road-trip story wrapped around a deep examination of the American spirit. Gaiman tackles everything from the onslaught of the information age to the meaning of death, but he doesn't sacrifice the razor-sharp plotting and narrative style he's been delivering since his Sandman days.

Shadow gets out of prison early when his wife is killed in a car crash. At a loss, he takes up with a mysterious character called Wednesday, who is much more than he appears. In fact, Wednesday is an old god, once known as Odin the All-father, who is roaming America rounding up his forgotten fellows in preparation for an epic battle against the upstart deities of the Internet, credit cards, television, and all that is wired. Shadow agrees to help Wednesday, and they whirl through a psycho-spiritual storm that becomes all too real in its manifestations. For instance, Shadow's dead wife Laura keeps showing up, and not just as a ghost--the difficulty of their continuing relationship is by turns grim and darkly funny, just like the rest of the book.

Armed only with some coin tricks and a sense of purpose, Shadow travels through, around, and underneath the visible surface of things, digging up all the powerful myths Americans brought with them in their journeys to this land as well as the ones that were already here. Shadow's road story is the heart of the novel, and it's here that Gaiman offers up the details that make this such a cinematic book--the distinctly American foods and diversions, the bizarre roadside attractions, the decrepit gods reduced to shell games and prostitution. "This is a bad land for Gods," says Shadow.

More than a tourist in America, but not a native, Neil Gaiman offers an outside-in and inside-out perspective on the soul and spirituality of the country--our obsessions with money and power, our jumbled religious heritage and its societal outcomes, and the millennial decisions we face about what's real and what's not. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
Titans clash, but with more fuss than fury in this fantasy demi-epic from the author of Neverwhere. The intriguing premise of Gaiman's tale is that the gods of European yore, who came to North America with their immigrant believers, are squaring off for a rumble with new indigenous deities: "gods of credit card and freeway, of Internet and telephone, of radio and hospital and television, gods of plastic and of beeper and of neon." They all walk around in mufti, disguised as ordinary people, which causes no end of trouble for 32-year-old protagonist Shadow Moon, who can't turn around without bumping into a minor divinity. Released from prison the day after his beloved wife dies in a car accident, Shadow takes a job as emissary for Mr. Wednesday, avatar of the Norse god Grimnir, unaware that his boss's recruiting trip across the American heartland will subject him to repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife and brutal roughing up by the goons of Wednesday's adversary, Mr. World. At last Shadow must reevaluate his own deeply held beliefs in order to determine his crucial role in the final showdown. Gaiman tries to keep the magical and the mundane evenly balanced, but he is clearly more interested in the activities of his human protagonists: Shadow's poignant personal moments and the tale's affectionate slices of smalltown life are much better developed than the aimless plot, which bounces Shadow from one episodic encounter to another in a design only the gods seem to know. Mere mortal readers will enjoy the tale's wit, but puzzle over its strained mythopoeia. (One-day laydown, June 19)Forecast: Even when he isn't in top form, Gaiman, creator of the acclaimed Sandman comics series, trumps many storytellers. Momentously titled, and allotted a dramatic one-day laydown with a 12-city author tour, his latest will appeal to fans and attract mainstream review coverage for better or for worse because of the rich possibilities of its premise.

From Library Journal
In his latest novel, Gaiman (Neverwhere) explores the vast and bloody landscape of myths and legends where the gods of yore and the neoteric gods of now conflict in modern-day America. The antihero, a man of unusually acute intellect through whose eyes we witness the behind-the-scenes dynamics of human religion and faith, is a convict called Shadow. He is flung into the midst of a supernatural fray of gods such as Odin, Anansi, Loki One-Eye, Thor, and a multitude of other ancient divinities as they struggle for survival in an America beset by trends, fads, and constant upheaval an environment not good for gods. They are joined in this struggle by such contemporary deities as the geek-boy god Internet and the goddess Media. There's a nice plot twist in the end, and the fascinating subject matter and impressive mythic scope are handled creatively and expertly. Gaiman is an exemplary short story writer, but his ventures into novels are also compellingly imaginative. Highly recommended for all libraries. Ann Kim, "Library Journal"

Like Nothing Else

This is an amazing book and I struggle to even find words to describe it. I my best estimation, the characters in the book or personifications of things that we idolize in American culture. The story that takes place mostly on the road, on the run, and prisons, national monuments, many strange an unforgettable characters. I would love to see this adapted into a television series. There's certainly plenty of material for something like that. Gaiman is one of the most imaginative writers around and this book stretches the imagination. I'm not sure if it's sci-fi, whore, action, drama, comedy, adventure, or some amalgamation of all of the genres on one but it is a great read.

A book about modern America, written by a Brit. And its Very Good
By craigzon harmer
What happens to gods after their believers die off and they're replaced by new gods?

If they never existed in the first place, then that's not a problem. But if they did, then this book offers an outcome -- they moved to the New World (North America) and live out their immortal existence in relative ignominy.

Ostensibly, the book is about the fate of the Old (and New) Gods in the New World, but it's also about the United Sates.

I'm having a hard time summarizing the book, but I couldn't put it down while I was reading it and I might read it again. Revelations at the end of the book cast a different light on events at the beginning of the book, so a reread of the book would interesting.

Who Needs The Other More: God or Man?
By 500 Books
Virtually every culture, around the world and across time, has some kind of religious/mythological belief system. Where did we come from? How are we to live? Those basic questions gave rise to hundreds, even thousands, of myths to give the answers (see: the entire Masks of God series I spent months of my life reading). In an anthropological/psychological sense, God did not create man. Man created the gods. And in Neil Gaiman's American Gods, we didn't just create them as concepts in the sky; they are corporeal beings and they need us, our prayers and our tributes, to thrive. But we as Americans haven't been giving them what they need for a long time now. What idols do we regard with something close to reverence today? TVs. Our phones. Our computers. And that has given rise to new gods in competition for our devotion with the old ones.

In its central and most straightforward plot line, American Gods follows Shadow Moon, a convict released from prison at the very beginning of the novel, and his work with the mysterious Mr. Wednesday to round up the old gods to do battle against the new in a final battle. But this isn't a straightforward novel, and its reach expands far beyond the basic premise. Gaiman explores the history of the gods, explaining how they got to the United States in the first place...from prehistoric travel across the land bridge over the Bering Straight, to the Vikings, to the slave trade and more. He shows us how these neglected gods survive in the real world: Bilquis, the Queen of Sheba, is a prostitute, and Thoth and Anubis have set up shop as undertakers for the minority community in a small town in Illinois. There's a short story within the novel of a gay Arab man, trying desperately to sell his brother-in-law's trinkets to distributors in New York City, and his encounter with an ifrit. There's a subplot about an idyllic small town in Wisconsin and how it stays prosperous and comfortable even while surrounding communities suffer. Gaiman has created a rich and thick and layered experience to read and absorb.

So why not a more glowing review, a higher rating? Well, as much as I appreciated it, I didn't connect with it very much. Shadow, our main character, is a cipher who neither speaks particularly often or has an especially rich inner life. And it makes sense, for who he's supposed to be: the only son of a peripatetic single mother who never had many friends growing up, who's spent a few years in the clink and loses the person closest to him right from the start. Why wouldn't he be withdrawn and closed off? Left alone in the world, why wouldn't he practice coin tricks instead of losing himself in his thoughts? But as much as I understand the characterization, it keeps the book at a distance, at least at first. As it moved along I got more swept up in it, but it still didn't quite click. It's actually a book I think would improve on re-read...now that I know what's coming and how it all plays out, I'd like to go back and start it from the beginning. Not right now. But eventually.

A mountaintop resort--the Stars of the title--plays host to a variety of terrestrial stars in Harvey's glamourous potboiler.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The troublesome lives of twin sisters Rachel Dwyer and Christine Singleton, separated at birth, are traced in this story. Rachel turns to prostitution after linking up with Danny McKay, a charismatic confidence man. Eventually, Rachel changes her identity and opens Stars, a posh California resort that provides discreet sexual services to guests. Christine uses her optimistic attitude to conquer a childhood weight problem and start an international weight-loss clinic. Their paths cross during a climactic scene when Danny seeks revenge on Rachel and mistakenly tries to kill her twin. This is trashy, light fiction, but some quirky plot twists keep it interesting. Actress Paula Prentiss reads at a frantic, overly dramatic pace. Recommended only for larger collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
Harvey (Butterfly, 1988, and pseudonym for a ``major author'') offers a slick but suspenseless novel set at a glamorous mountain retreat for the rich and famous. Set atop Mount San Jacinto near Palm Springs, Star's is a top- flight, 42-room luxury retreat where Tinseltown's hottest wheelers and dealers go to lose weight, cut a deal, or indulge in forbidden romance. The owner, the mysterious Beverly Burgess, is a woman with a past: she once owned a high-class brothel (called Butterfly--the subject of Harvey's first novel) where women paid for sex with handsome young things. Beverly was clever enough to stage her own death to escape her nemesis, the evil and power-hungry Danny Mackay; she then changed her name, her appearance, and came back to life again. But what Beverly doesn't know is that Mackay is still bent on his own brand of sick revenge. Also unknown to Beverly is that she has a twin sister named Philippa Roberts (they were separated at birth when her destitute parents sold one of their daughters to a childless couple), who has spent years looking for her and, thanks to a private detective's lead, is now on her way to Star's as well. Because of the physical resemblance between the sisters, Mackay confuses Philippa with Beverly and follows her to Star's, where his attempts to kill her are thwarted by Beverly. If all this sounds pretty far-fetched, it is, and so are the other equally contrived subplots--Philippa's rise to fame and fortune as the head of a super-successful diet program; a beautiful Hollywood actress bent on seducing a screenwriter for the lead role in his new movie; etc. Meanwhile, the hackneyed descriptions of sex, the endless catalogue of brand-names, and the cookie-cutter characterizations don't help. For all its promise of dazzle, this is a lackluster attempt. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Read Butterfly first to get the full effect
By Scarletaka
You must read Butterfly before reading Stars. If you read this one first you are missing out on a lot! This story continues with the Beverly and Danny story/war. From Butterfly she was bent on revenge for Danny talking her into an abortion and getting her involved in being a prostitute at a young age. I can't tell you too much about what happened to them because it is an important element of this story. This is the story of Phillipa the twin sister of Beverly (unknown to Beverly) who is searching for information on her twin.
Phillipa once overweight has transformed herself and is running a successful Diet center. After hiring a private detective she is on the trail of finding out what happened to her twin. However, Danny Mackay is bent on his own revenge and seeing Phillipa makes him think she's Beverly.
Ms. Harvey does it again with Stars. She creates a wonderfully intricate story that jumps off the page. The sex is graphic so if you don't like that be warned that she doesn't close bedroom doors. This is a wonderful story to get wrapped up again and a great conclusion to the Butterfly book.
I was so glad to find out she'd written a sequel and was equally happy after reading it. Like Butterfly I read this book in one night and then reread it. The characters are well written and come so alive through Ms. Harvey's story.
I love the book and even if she decided to add another twist and come up with a 3rd book I'd eagerly read it even though Stars closed the story.
5 Stars and more for both books! LOVE IT!

Not as good a followup as could have been...
By M. Lynch
I'm a huge fan of "Butterfly" so I was delighted to see this one come out. However, it didn't quite prove as satisfying as I'd hoped. I would like to have seen it bring back more of the characters from "Butterfly." The story isn't quite as satisfying as the original & the secondary characters are a bit silly. But, if Ms. Harvey ever decides to follow her main character a bit further in another book, I'm game! Despite the rating though, if you liked "Butterfly" you really have to read "Stars."

Manly Love: Romantic Friendship in American Fiction, by Axel Nissen

The modern idea of Victorians is that they were emotionless prudes, imprisoned by sexual repression and suffocating social constraints; they expressed love and affection only within the bounds of matrimony—if at all. And yet, a wealth of evidence contradicting this idea has been hiding in plain sight for close to a century. In Manly Love, Axel Nissen turns to the novels and short stories of Victorian America to uncover the widely overlooked phenomenon of passionate friendships between men.

Nissen’s examination of the literature of the period brings to light a forgotten genre: the fiction of romantic friendship. Delving into works by Mark Twain, Henry James, William Dean Howells, and others, Nissen identifies the genre’s unique features and explores the connections between romantic friendships in literature and in real life. Situating love between men at the heart of Victorian culture, Nissen radically alters our understanding of the American literary canon. And with its deep insights into the emotional and intellectual life of the period, Manly Love also offers a fresh perspective on nineteenth-century America’s attitudes toward love, friendship, marriage, and sex.

Review
“This is the most interesting and original study of nineteenth-century American literature and culture that I have read in years. In the wake of Manly Love, the field will never look quite the same. Nissen has trumped nearly every other scholar in recapturing and elucidating some fundamental patterns of American Victorian culture. His engaging, even suspenseful, book transported me into those times more fully than anything I know from outside the period itself, such that his insights attain an emotional as well as intellectual force. This book deserves a sustained standing ovation.”

(John W. Crowley, University of Alabama)

“Manly Love uncovers amazing examples of male romantic friendship in literary classics as well as in hitherto lost literary gems. It is the first comprehensive history of love between men as it was reflected in nineteenth-century American fiction. Axel Nissen engagingly and definitively challenges the historical amnesia which assumes that the transatlantic uproar over the Oscar Wilde case represented the whole story of the American Victorian response to male homoeroticism.”

(Lillian Faderman, author of Surpassing the Love of Men: Romantic Friendship and Love Between Women from the Renaissance to the Present)

"Nissen combines historical contextualization with fresh readings of the novels' identity formations and cultural work in reflecting and defining acceptable masculine intimacies across the homo-social/homosexual divide. In so doing, he offers new angles on familiar texts and the cultural myths that surround them." (Choice)

"Manly Love is a pleasure to read, full of insights that go beyond the analyses of individual works. . . . [The] book drives home the point that love and friendship between males, with or without sex, is a crucial component of the human experience." (John Lauritsen Gay and Lesbian Review)

About the Author

"Come Back to the Raft, Huck Honey"
By Charlus
The theme of romantic friendship as a description of male intimate relationships in the 19th Century has been pioneered by the groundbreaking study by Alan Bray (The Friend) who explored earlier times, and was brought into the 19th century by historians such as Sharon Marcus (Between Women: Friendship, Desire, and Marriage in Victorian England) and Jonathan Ned Katz (Love Stories: Sex between Men before Homosexuality). The fact that the homoerotic need not necessarily shade into the explicitly sexual and the ambiguity this gives reading the historic documents has proved frustrating for theorists who wish to define sexuality throughout history in modern day categories, usually, though not always, for political purposes.

Axel Nissen provides the social underpinings for his previous collection (The Romantic Friendship Reader: Love Stories Between Men in Victorian America)in this well researched and clearly written addition to the literary history of sexual expression. By choosing a limited number of 19th Century titles, most but not all forgotten, he clarifies the common themes and limitations in the literature of romantic friendship (mainly) between men. These works are: "Cecil Dreeme" by Theodore Winthrop, "Roderick Hudson" by Henry James, "A Saloonkeeper's Daughter" by Drude Krog Janson (where female romantic friendship is explored), "Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, and "A Hazard of New Fortunes" by William Dean Howells. Other works are discussed in the introductory chapters including the novels of Bayard Taylor and some of the short stories of Bret Harte.

Nissen doesn't insist that what we understand as modern day sexual experience is implied in these fictional relationships though he dosen't eliminate the possibility either. He recognizes that certain mysteries remain unsolved. But by putting the emphasis on the emotional rather than the physical and showing how this was an accepted aspect of Victorian American culture, he gives us an entry into understanding the sensibility of a society and a literature that is all but lost to us today.

Wonderful beyond words ....
By John in NJ
I just rediscoverd this DVD I bought last year and watched it again and found myself captivated by the music, particularly by the first piece "Dawn" (which later played so beautifully by Gorgiana in Pemberly). I ordered the music immediately.

The book arrived today (only two days after I ordered). I looked at it and thought there must be some mistake. How can there be so few notes! I thought to myself, oh no, this must be the simplified version, now I could never reproduce that hauntingly beautiful music that Georgiana played on my piano .. I was disappointed beyond words.

Nevertheless, hope against hope, I convinced myself to give it a try .. and surprise surprise, after a few minutes, I realized this is the real thing, and after a few hours, I found my playing that exact same (well almost exact same :-) beautiful music I heard on the DVD!

I am so happy! Thank you, thank you!

(I quit playing piano last year after many years playing classical piano. Now I am slowly starting to pick up again and this is the kind of music I want to play.)

(I am still confused whether there are two versions otf this music book. My book says "Piano Solo", not "Easy Piano Solo")

Love It!
By Edward Blankenship
I ordered this book and was wary. It said Easy Piano and I was afraid that it would be like a beginner level and be too easy. But I got it and it's perfect. It's not extremely diffcult but it still isn't a cinch. It has all of the famous songs from the movies and more. I love it so far.

Beautiful Music from the Movie
By Joolieboo
If you loved the music from Pride & Prejudice movie (the 2005 Keira Knightly version), you will love this book.

The "Easy Piano" version is an intermediate level book, not a beginner book, so be careful if you're just starting out with the piano (and stick with the Big Note version). Likewise, advance players may be a little bored and should check out the Piano Solo book.

Strengthen your legal vocabulary in seriousness and fun
By A Customer
This is an excellent resource for law students, paralegals, legal secretaries and law clerks. Each chapter shows the words in use and gives real-world explanations of the terms. At the end of each chapter there are true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and crossword puzzle exercises to test your knowledge. This book covers just about all the major areas of law: criminal, civil, torts, bankruptcy, property, wills/estate... you name it. I swear by this book - it really helped me in pre-law. At many colleges, this book is standard.

It looks more than it really is
By Juliana Noemi Anich
It could be an excellent resource for law students, paralegals, legal secretaries and law clerks and it is true that each chapter shows the words in use and gives real-world explanations of the terms. But at the end of each chapter there are true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and crossword puzzle exercises to test your knowledge which have not any key. I think it is very expensive in relation to the book offers you.

Useful for online learning
By A. Giles
This book was my first introduction to law and as a potential court reporter, we don't need to know all the details, just enough to do our job. The book was perfect for that. It gives just the right amount of detail and has numerous types of exercises to reinforce the material. It would have been nice to have the fifth edition of the book as this was the one we were using in class, but I was able to follow along just fine using this book.
