In Capable Arms

Keep the tissues handy when reading Sarah's very heartfelt journey in this life this side of heaven. Is it depressing? By no means! Yet, when reading how Sarah felt about herself or how others treated her, it wasn't always with the kindest of words or actions. As you read each chapter, there are small grey boxes that have questions for readers to journal their thoughts, emotions or whatever.
Growing up different wasn't a smooth walk for this young woman, and sometimes she shares how she herself added to the learning curve of being different. I can imagine having people look at her and make snap judgments about her without her even opening her mouth. How cool it was to read how Sarah and her husband met, and he wasn't even focused on her disability!
Through various seasons of her life she has faced each day with honesty and dependency on the Lord. She says without fear that there were times she "didn't know" how to handle a certain situation. Yet, God provided her with what she needed, and He has stretched her faith in Him through what for many are simple everyday tasks we never give a thought to doing.
At the end of the book, there is an interview with her parents. Great idea! Frankly, I think many of us want to know how parents made it through the challenges of raising someone with a physical disability. Sarah could have lived on hiding if she chose to. To me, she is a courageous woman. She is married with children who keep her life busy, and she travels to share her story with audiences across the nation.
As I read this, I was reflecting on how blessed I am, even when there are days I don't necessarily feel so. I was reminded that no matter what, all of us have jobs to do, ones made especially for us by our Creator. Sarah and her family are following what the Lord has called them to do. Are you or am I? Is there something we are allowing to hold us back from doing what God has prepared for us to do?
I was raised with a sister who is mentally retarded, and I learned a lot from her as well as my parents. In fact, my other three siblings have too. I can't wait till we get to heaven and I get to hear her voice in a way I can't this side of heaven. Read, be encouraged and challenged. Grab your Bible, a notebook and be ready to learn from this special woman God has created!

Appreciation of one's self just as is

"In Capable Arms" is THE MOST heartwarming book I have yet to read. It's a story about one's life with a disability that may be physical but does not prevent this amazing woman to learn and do things that are important to her. I had never heard of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. Sarah, thank you for opening your world to us. Thank you for showing us how special life is no matter what obstacles we face. Yes, each day is filled with obstacles. Each day is also filled with opportunities.

To read your story and hear how happy you are in how much you have achieved, warms my heart. I have always believed that we are all here for a purpose. It's what we do with what we have that makes the difference. It's showing each other and supporting each other because we love and believe in them.

Life is filled with capable arms of love and support. It's those arms that help us grow into who we are.

I HIGHLY recommend you picking up a copy of this book today. You will learn how to smile in a whole new way.

Insightful and honest

My friend wrote this. I normally have a difficult time reading non-fiction, but her writing is pretty awesome. It was more than just reading a story about her life and struggle with a disability. Her honesty and insightfulness throughout her story are helping me to see a way to get through my own struggle with my own difficulties that I have let determine my success and happiness in life.

There were moments of tears and laughter as I remembered a few of my own experiences with Sarah in the two years we attended school together. Her words and life experience are impactful, and I highly recommend this book.

The lesson that most students never learn is that all text books are really the same. And if you really want to learn something, it's the effort you put into your mastery of the subject that matters, not the price of the book.

INCREDIBLE book. Period.

Wow, I can’t believe there is not one review of this book yet. If you have this book, please review it. If you do not have it, buy it. Or at least check out the sample as soon as possible. Trust me. This is hands down the best book on CBT for clients I have ever seen, and I’ve gone read many. The information is laid out in a coherent, easy to follow format and the author lays everything out in an extremely practical way that you can start applying right away. The information in this book has already begun changing my life for the better. It allows me to challenge my assumptions and be happier and more effective in a day to day basis. It's an absolute must-read. This goes up with the top two books I have ever read, the second being The Mood Cure by Julia Ross. CBT has stood the test of science time and time again and is considered the gold standard for evidence based therapies that actually work. And this book is complete and comprehensive overview of that philosophy. Great book.

One of my favorite Miss Marple short stories

A very enjoyable Miss Marple short story that has been issued for sale by itself. Besides Miss Marple the story includes returning characters from full length books: Clitheroe from Scotland Yard and the Bantrys from the novel "The Body in the Library". Clitheroe tells a story at the dinner table of a post war murder of Dr. Rosen by an unknown German spy who must be one of four people. One of the four suspects, all living with Dr. Rosen in an isolated cottage in the countryside, received a "message" to kill Dr. Rosen. To remove the cloud of suspicion hanging over three innocent people, Clitheroe asks for Miss Marple's help. Both red herrings and fair clues are presented. Very solvable.

For two millennia the right way to teach geometry was the Euclidean approach, and in many respects, this is still the case. But in the 1950s the cry "Down with triangles!" was heard in France and new geometry books appeared, packed with linear algebra but with no diagrams. Was this the new right approach? Or was the right approach still something else, perhaps transformation groups?

The Four Pillars of Geometry approaches geometry in four different ways, spending two chapters on each. This makes the subject accessible to readers of all mathematical tastes, from the visual to the algebraic. Not only does each approach offer a different view; the combination of viewpoints yields insights not available in most books at this level. For example, it is shown how algebra emerges from projective geometry, and how the hyperbolic plane emerges from the real projective line.

The author begins with Euclid-style construction and axiomatics, then proceeds to linear algebra when it becomes convenient to replace tortuous arguments with simple calculations. Next, he uses projective geometry to explain why objects look the way they do, as well as to explain why geometry is entangled with algebra. And lastly, the author introduces transformation groups---not only to clarify the differences between geometries, but also to exhibit geometries that are unexpectedly the same.

All readers are sure to find something new in this attractive text, which is abundantly supplemented with figures and exercises. This book will be useful for an undergraduate geometry course, a capstone course, or a course aimed at future high school teachers.

John Stillwell is Professor of Mathematics at the University of San Francisco. Professor Stillwell was my History of Mathematics Professor at the University of San Francisco. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the PhD in Mathematics. He is an engaging lecturer and has written many textbooks on mathematics, especially important in the history of mathematics. His writing is clear prose and well revised and published. This textbook on the four pillars of geometry provides a gentle introduction to the geometries studied by professional mathematicians, without delving too deeply into advanced topics. He provides exercises for interested readers. This book is well organized and counts a significant contribution to the literature of mathematics in the modern century.
