About the Author
Bradley A. Shellito is a geographer whose work focuses on the application of geospatial technologies.  Dr. Shellito has been a professor at Youngstown State University (YSU) since 2004, and was previously a faculty member at Old Dominion University.  He teaches classes in GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS, and 3D Visualization and his research interests involve using these concepts with a variety of real-world issues.  He also serves as YSU’s PI in OhioView, a statewide geospatial consortium.  A native of the Youngstown area, Dr. Shellito received his bachelor’s degree from YSU, his Masters from the Ohio State University, and his doctorate from Michigan State University.

Helping fill gaps in learning not met in GIS course labs.

This book is phenomenal. My concentration in school is GIScience and remote sensing. My professor loaned me her copy for an internship, and I loved it so much, I went out and bought one myself.

This book has superb step-by-step methodology for learning complex ArcGIS analytics. I've taught myself address location, network analysis, and bridged the gap between ArcGIS and remote sensing using this book alone. The chapter on address location taught me all I needed to know to help build client based maps for a nonprofit in town that provides basic needs and housing to persons in need. This book helped those people directly, simply with it's clear and concise explanation of address location and address correction.

Each chapter has subset boxes providing more detailed information behind the point-and-clicking of GIS. You're not just going to be a monkey making maps, the book provides some rounded introduction into GIScience theory, which is crucial. Each chapter has additional citations on where to go to learn more in ArcGIS Help, or elsewhere.

If you're building a course, I'd recommend this as a tool for building and constructing labs. I was a TA in a cartography lab for two semesters, and I'd say this book has taught me much more, to bridge the gap between academia and reality. I will depend on this as a reference as I finalize my time as a student, and enter the GIS workforce.

Excellent overview ...

I'm surprised that there are only two reviews of this book. This book gives plenty of practical information and advice about both the business and the artistry of wedding photography.

He shares experience in easy to read and understand writing and I find it refreshing that he isn't so dogmatic about the equipment (i.e. must have 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.4 lenses, FF sensor and so on). He explains many things not only in technical terms but also why it makes sense from business standpoint and how to be efficient and to maximized your time and profits.

I do think people who are drawn to this field of work have high artistic sensibilities but sometimes lag behind in business acumen necessary to achieve commercial success. He addresses this issue from get go and makes no bones about what type of commitment is needed to succeed in the business.

I enjoyed his take on what his "wedding repertoire" is as well as the chapter on postures and poses. An excellent read for any budding wedding photographer.

Solid, Wide-Ranging and Well Organized

Whether you agree 100% or not with all of Steve's personal preferences, he carefully lays out the knowledge you'll need to be a successful wedding photographer. He has shot thousands of weddings and can probably do them in his sleep. His experience comes through in the text compared with certain other wedding photographer books where the author only started shooting weddings a few years ago. Steve has seen the field from every angle. His text (and excellent accompanying imagery) gives you both the breadth and depth of the field. Definitely one of the better (best?) books you can buy on this topic (and there are worse!). If you're deciding between books on this topic then this is definitely a safe one to choose.

This is an excellent book for anyone who takes wedding photos with a real camera. (Yes, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek for that comment)

I recently turned my hobby into a business. I'd taken many wedding photos, for friends of my sons. Turning that into a paying job required a little instruction. This book certainly filled that bill.

The author goes into many particulars about the wedding photography business. What equipment do I need? What should I pack in my bag for the day of the shoot? What should I charge? What do I do with the photos after the shoot? Best editing program? (I use Lightroom) Where do I send photos for post production?

There are also some great tips for poses and lighting.

I ordered several books on the topic. This is my go-to reference.

Alexis Sanchez has an amazing life story. He is a rags to riches story. The most important thing is that the money has not changed him. The "Daily Mail" reported on his background when he signed a contract with Arsenal. His story is a made for Hollywood movie: "Sanchez grew up in Tocopilla, rural Chile, and earned money from the age of six. His father abandoned him as a toddler and his mother worked several jobs to take care of the family. Alexis, who is 25, now earns £130,000-a-week! Sanchez used to perform acrobatics and box in the street for money. He was nicknamed 'El Nino Marvailla', or 'the Wonder Kid', due to his talents. He donated £140,000 to replace five football pitches near Tocopilla last year. " This book will help people to understand that you must never give up hope. If we try hard enough, we can achieve our dreams. I recommend this story for all people to read.

Inspirational, enriching, and a FEEL GOOD read for all ages!

Alexis Sanchez: The Beautiful Game, was gifted to me, and albeit my first read by Thomas Jerome Baker, it will not be my last.
Even though basketball is my favorite sport, Baker skillfully peaked my interest in football /soccer with his unique writing about not only the sport, but about an amazing and dedicated player. In unique style, Baker enlightens readers about this unconventional and inspirational player, Alexis Sanchez. In today's world of high paid, arrogant players in all realms of sports, it was refreshing to read about a man who did not let success go to his head or change his life in a negative way. I know the majority of players are nowhere near as humble as Baker depicts Sanchez to be.

Without this being a biography, Baker relates a poignant tale of unprivileged beginnings and a young man determined to rise above it all, with such finesse you feel you personally know Sanchez. What an insightful, beautiful story that should be read by millions of young people to encourage them to never stop following their dreams, but to know dreams only come to fruition if you do the required work and keep a positive attitude.

Alexis Sanchez: The Beautiful Game: Poetry In Motion, is a fast read that keeps one entertained and richer in spirit for having read it. I enjoyed this more than I ever thought I would (thanks for those shirtless photos, Mr. Baker!), and it touched me so deeply, I strongly believe it should be placed in schools. We can't all be the best athlete, but we can all improve aspects of our lives that will evolve us into better human beings.

Poetry In Motion

Football is just not my game. It holds no interest for me. 22 players running up and down a big field for 90 minutes only to finish with a score of 1-0 does not even begin to hold my interest. Since I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my fair and honest review, I decided to read the book anyway. When I read it, I admit I was bored at first. It read like Alexis Sanchez had paid the author to rave about his playing ability! But then I saw the first video where Sanchez does with his feet what a magician does with his hands to mislead the goalkeeper. I slowed that bit right down to see exactly how he did it. I can see now why the author describes Sanchez as poetry in motion. His goal was amazing, and from that point on I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Alexis Sánchez. Why did Manchester City pull out of the bidding for him? They must surely be aware that they missed out signing an excellent player. And then there is the fantastic goal he scored for Barcelona against Real Madrid. The commentary by Ray Hudson is priceless: Quote - "He’s off running like he’s got a lobster down his shorts, but then he puts the ceramic brakes on...and then, takes the gravity of the moon and the planets into consideration"... Even though I still don't like football, the game is just too boring for me, I have become a fan of Alexis Sanchez. 5 stars for Alexis Sanchez.

This book was ok it was not as good as some of the others I've read. I have not read this series in order. I read the wolf who hatched an egg first. The the shark who rode the sea horse. Then the two books about the lynx brothers . Those books are better. But this ones ok!

Excellent book and companion to the RHCE study guide!

This book was written with the intentions of being used with Michael Jang's other RHCSA / RHCE Study Guide (http://www.amazon.com/RHCSA-Linux-Certification-Study-Edition/dp/0071765654/)

I have both of these books. I used the RHCSA / RHCE study guide to earn my RHCE a few months ago, but I also have this companion as a tool to keep sharp. This is another well written, well thought out book by Mr. Jang. He gives excellent exercises and examples in the text, and they are all designed to work in tandem with the virtual machines he includes on the DVD that ships with the book. He gives great instructions for setting up the virtual machines in the book, which essentially gives you a perfect "Practice Lab" that is essential to retaining the RHCE knowledge.

If you are looking at this book, I assume you know that the Red Hat exams are purely practical and very difficult. With both of Mr. Jangs study guide and companion (this book), you will have everything you need to go from barely knowing linux, to being able to master both the RHCSA and RHCE exams. I have been fortunate to attend actual Red Hat training, and these books were the perfect study companion as well.

I honestly cant give this book a good enough review it is that good. I can only attest that without these books, earning my RHCE would have been *difficult*. In the linux field, this is the most highly recommend books for Red Hat based distributions. Not only will they serve you well in preparation for the exams, they will give you years of benefit as a solid desk reference. Mr. Jang gives great explanations of the How's and Why's of each subject, that you actually learn the materials.

Just be ware, This book is designed to be used as the companion to his main study guide. I would recommend that you buy both of Mr. Jang's Red Hat books if you are planning to sit for the exams. Read them. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter, answer the questions. Don't move on to the next chapter until you feel you have mastered the current one. The questions and exercises he gives in both the Study Guide and this Companion are designed to reinforce the material he taught in that chapter. The books are also well laid out, in that you will learn all the tools you need first, before you move on to the advanced chapters.

Concise, thorough, well written

Pre-ordered this book before it was released and got it early. It's great. It assumes very little knowledge to begin with which was frustrating at first because I was looking for a review. This book was recommended to me by a RedHat instructor. The author's preface goes on and on about how this is not a replacement for instruction from RedHat, and so on. Hooey on that. If you have access to a decent 64-bit computer (required by the virtual machines that come with the book), and a CentOS iso (or you can download one), you will be well on your way toward mastery. Read the book, do the exercises, read the recommended reading and take the assesment tests on RedHat's site, and you'll do fine. Aced the RHCSA and feel comfortable with testing for RHCE which I will do early December.
I recommend this book to anyone really dedicated to RedHat certification. There is a lot of work to do on your part; this book is merely a guide, but it is a very competent guide.

Good book, good practice questions & exams - not so great VMs

I'll start off by saying that I own both the Study Guide and this Practice Exams guide. Many people in my office have purchased copies and find these to be the most useful, authoritative prep out there for these exams.

Thanks Mike Jang for keeping this series current.

Now for my gripes:

1. I expected that the contents of the physical book would be included as PDFs on the DVD or within the gamma VM as I'm accustomed to from the study guide. They are not.

2. The practice VMs idea had promise, but I found the execution to not have turned out so great. I think this would have been better of as a compressed folder that you'd drop on the home dir of your main VM, perhaps with a simple shell script to do any VM customization (not really necessary). You're far better served by standing up 3 current Scientific Linux 6.3 VMs on a Scientific Linux 6.3 physical box using virt-manager, then copying the exam and lab files and folders over to your own VMs.

The McGraw Hill YUM repository included in the VM's yum.repos.d is worthless at best and troublesome at worst (broken mirror errors galore) - if you use the VMs make sure you just disable those right away and use the proper Scientific Linux repositories.

All in all a good book, if I could do half-stars I'd give it a 3.5.

This book is designed to be an introduction to some of the basic ideas in the field of algebraic topology. In particular, it is devoted to the foundations and applications of homology theory. The only prerequisite for the student is a basic knowledge of abelian groups and point set topology. The essentials of singular homology are given in the first chapter, along with some of the most important applications. In this way the student can quickly see the importance of the material. The successive topics include attaching spaces, finite CW complexes, the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms, cohomology products, manifolds, Poincare duality, and fixed point theory. Throughout the book, the approach is as illustrative as possible, with numerous examples and diagrams. Extremes of generality are sacrificed when they are likely to obscure the essential concepts involved. The book is intended to be easily read by students as a textbook for a course or as a source for individual study. This second edition has been expanded to include a new chapter on covering spaces, as well as additional illuminating exercises. The conceptual approach is again used to show how lifting problems give rise to the fundamental group and its properties.

Very simply, the best introductory book on homology there is.

I've studied and refreshed my understanding of algebraic topology from lots of books over the years, and I always come back to this one. It's the best of the lot by far, for me -- easy to read, beautifully geometrically motivated, and displaying as light a touch as possible with algebraic and categorical details (which are introduced in digestible pieces as the need for them arises). I'd say that anyone with a good facility for basic group theory, even with a quite minimal background in point-set topology, can come to understand homology theory quite easily by following this book. I love the fact that Vick takes the reader straight into the thick of things, quickly getting to computations of homology groups of spheres and deducing a slew of nice geometric theorems from them (invariance of dimension, invariance of domain, Brouwer's fixed point theorem, the "hairy ball" theorem, the Jordan separation theorem, etc.) -- and that he doesn't waste any time with the tedium of simplicial complexes, the simplicial approximation theorem, and all that. It has always seemed perverse to me that beginning books tend to start with the simplicial theory; true, it's conceptually very basic, but its technical details are very easy to get bogged down in. Vick begins with singular homology, which is far easier to set up on a technical level than its simplicial cousin. After a number of very worthwhile deductions from the singular theory, he introduces CW complexes and shows that their homology is the same as that obtained from the singular theory. His treatments of products and Poincare duality are also outstanding. The best thing about this book is that it's genuinely accessible to the beginning graduate student. You don't need to have had a course in category theory to read and understand this book. (In fact, seeing some things in a concrete setting here, like direct limits, will undoubtedly help people understand their more abstract categorical versions later on in graduate school). I will make one criticism of this book's way into homology theory, and that is that Vick neglects to prove Hurewicz's result that the first homology group of a path-connected space is the abelianization of the fundamental group. Although this result is nowhere needed in the book, to me it's really essential for understanding the geometric content of the integer coefficient of a given singular n-simplex within a given n-chain, at least in the easily visualized case n = 1. (It also helps in solving one of the exercises in this book, where one has to construct a map from the n-sphere to itself with any given integer as its degree; once you understand the Hurewicz result, it's easy to find such a map on the circle in the complex plane, and then repeatedly iterate the suspension operator to increase the dimension of the sphere.) Apart from this detail, I love everything about this book. There are some typos, but that's true in most books, and they didn't bother me that much. I recommend this book to any novice student of algebraic topology, and especially to any who feel that their background in abstract algebraic machinery (category theory, homological algebra) is somewhat lacking. You'll learn it well from this book. Enjoy it.
