Instead of a return to traditional religious worship, Roy argues we are witnessing the individualization of faith and the disassociation of faith communities from ethnic and national identities. This has placed culturally integrated religions, such as Catholicism and eastern orthodox Christianity, on the defensive, and presents new challenges to state and society. Roy explores the options available to powers that hope to integrate or control these groups, and he considers whether marginalization or homogenization will further divide believers from their culture.

Beauties in Paradise

Howard Roffman has long been respected for his books that feature the extraordinarily handsome and sensuous models from the famous organization called Bel Ami. For this project Roffman left his San Francisco headquarters and set out for a shooting on the isle of Bali, taking with him four amazingly striking lads - gymnast Adam Archuleta, racing enthusiast Andre Boleyn, the smart and endowed Jack Harrer and the new Czech model Kevin Warhol. Lukas Ridgeston served as the official videographer.

What Roffman celebrates here is the beauty of the land and the atmosphere of Bali and places his models in this scenic paradise where a lot of things happen - surfing, sightseeing, swimming, involvement with the island animals, and of course lots of preening and interaction with each other. There is an inherent innocence in the postures of these young men and Roffman captures that quality, making the very intimate scenes sensuous and fresh. Joe O'Mahoney is Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Business School and a Fellow of the CIPD. Prior to this he was Lecturer in Organization and Technology at Lancaster University. Joe has held a number of positions in industry including the role of Senior Business Consultant at 3G Mobile where he was involved with the start up of the company. Joe was also Director and Co-founder of Stay Mobile, Technology Ltd, a company that develops and leases a product for recharging mobile phones in public places. Joe's areas of expertise are change management and consultancy, including innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural change, new product development, and systems design.


Calvert Markham is the Managing Director of Elevation Learning, the leading educator of consultancy practitioners and Visiting Professor in the Practice of Management Consultancy at Cass Business School. John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer, and after a successful career in advertising and television, he began writing a series of short stories for his son, Michael, in order to encourage him to read. Those stories would eventually become The Ruins of Gorlan, Book 1 of the Ranger’s Apprentice epic. Together with his companion series, Brotherband Chronicles, the novels of John Flanagan have sold millions of copies and made readers of kids the world over. Mr. Flanagan lives in the suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. So fabulous!!

After reading all of the Ranger's Apprentice and the Brotherband Chronicles I can honestly say this is one of my favourites. The plot was incredible, complicated enough to keep my wondering but not confused. The characters and their development is simply phenomenal, we get to meet the characters in their youth and understand their backgrounds and lives. This is not just about Halt and Crowley, the characters that I had grown to love in the previous (or I guess later) stories were here too. I cannot speak highly enough of this book, it is definitely one of the best books ever written.

I now want to go out and buy them all

I received this book for free from Philomel Books in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I haven’t read any other books in this series. But after finishing this one, I now want to go out and buy them all!

The characters and world-building was amazing. I loved everyone, even the bad guys. And the book was funny, I laughed out loud for most of the day. And it only took me a day to finish reading, because once I started I didn’t want to put the book down until it was finished.

The descriptions of Rangers and the way the jousting tournament works was spot on. There was no over-sharing like in some books, and everything written served to make the story more real. There was a lot of descriptions about what the characters were eating, and their camps. Which might drag on a bit for some people, but it made the story more realistic for me. And all the descriptions of food kept making me hungry!

Halt and Crowley are tied for my favorite character. I loved how they poked fun at each other, but worked really well together and could be serious when there was need. (Okay, so Halt was serious a lot more often than Crowley, but still!) They were the perfect duo and I can’t imagine any of the other characters filling either of their roles.

This is totally the kind of book where once you finish it, you want to run right out and get everything else the author has ever written. If you haven’t read this yet, you need to do so!

This great series just keeps on going

Yet another great book in the Ranger's Apprentice series. Morgarath works to take over the kingdom, imprisoning the King and also Prince Duncan, as well as disbanding the Ranger Corps. Crowley and Halt work to gather all the rangers and work to save the kingdom.

The beauty of this book is the banter and relationship between Halt and Crowley, seeing how Halt became a Ranger, the interplay between the rangers, and the scheming of Morgarath . It has the same feel and polish of the other books and is a fun page-turner.

This series has yet to let me down and this one is just another stellar work in an already excellent set of adventures. I'm very much looking forward to the next one.
