Poetry meets practicality

This book is a gem.
Written in the 1880's, this book illumines the poetic life of the family.
Would it be controversial, if published now? Absolutely. It devalues autonomy, assumes the existence of absolutes, and certainly leads the reader to think that real poetry in life is found through surrendering autonomy and embracing your husband, wife, children, brother, sister.
It's classic romance, but without fluff. The level of prose transcends anything published these days -- be ready to enjoy the english language at its finest.
And be ready for a truly refreshing introduction to life as we should know it. Less harried, less materialistic, less self-introspective, and more appreciative of the things that give life meaning -- the people directly around us.
This book teaches brothers how to care for sisters, and vice-versa. It teaches wives how to help their husbands become their best, and how men can bring out every facet of their wives' beauty. It even gives parents perspective in dealing with the loss of a child. This is not pop-psychology.
This is wisdom.

DON'T LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU! It's not another how to wash the dishes or how to keep a cleaner house,but rather a guide for every family member to do their part in making the home everything God intended it to be. It has the following chapters: The Wedded Life (perfect for those engaged, so they know what they are committing to); The Husband's Part; The Wife's part; The Parents' Part; The Childrens' Part; Brothers and Sisters; The

Home-Life; Religion in the Home; Home Memories. Each chapter deals with a different person in the home...one excerpt says, "In home-making each member of the family has a part, and the fullest happiness and blessedness of the home can be attained only when each one's part is faithfully fulfilled. If any one member of the family fails in love or duty, the failure mars the whole household life, just as one discordant voice in a company of singers spoils the music, though all the others sing in perfect accord." It's an amazingly awesome book and is written in 19th century poetic style, making it very enjoyable to read! I was extremely impressed, as was my husband. The wisdom within the pages of this book are priceless and what's amazing, is that it is still relevent for today! However, it does raise the bar and will challenge everyone within the family. (It really zones in on how to treat one another) It's not too demanding, but very scriptural, the same standards that are in the Word of God. It will inspire you moms, and will show you the eternal value of raising your children...it's uplifting and made me (as a mom) feel like I'm doing a more worthy job than leading a corporation,

or being the Queen of England! I only wish I had read this book 15 years earlier, when my kids were very little.

Don't be fooled by the title of this book - this is for husband, wife, and children! Not to mention those who are single! This book is very attune to the heart of Scripture, seeking to glorify God to the highest and impart to the reader the deep responsibility and beauty of fulfilling each family member's God-given roles! Quite the refreshment! Must read for engaged couples, invaluable resource for those married.

Tins filled with cookies'.

Each year at Christmas my grandmother would take out about 20 (it seemed) cookie tins and bake until each and every one of those tins were filled with cookies during the winter months and especially near Christmas.

This is also the "cooky" book we had as children. I fondly remember spending hours just looking through this book and wishing the cookies I wanted to make would magically appear on a plate. Soon, I was old enough to cook the Peanut butter Cookies, Russian Teacakes and Candy Cane Cookies. My favorite page as a child was page 56. A page filled with storybook cookies. Painted and iced sugar cookies.

The contents include:

Drop, Bar, Refrigerator, Rolled, Pressed and Molded Cookies.

Holiday Cookies for Valentine's Day, St. Patricks's Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

Cookies for Children, Lunchbox treats, Cookies that will travel, Heritage cookies, Cookies for Special Diets.

In this cookbook, they say you can use either the traditional or the sifting method. We always used the traditional dip and sweep method for measuring the flour. Then, on the next page they explain why your cookie dough might be too soft. I've always found this rather amusing, since you see...if you use the sifting method, you will possibly not have enough flour, at least in my mind. Most cookbooks say to use one OR the
other method.

The Only One You'll Need

My mom gave me her copy of Betty Crocker's Cooky Book when I got married. The book is literally falling apart -- the back cover is no longer attached, but still sits in the bookshelf next to the rest of the book.
This would make a wonderful gift for anyone who likes to bake. It's full of great recipes, some of which I've made so many times that I know them by heart.
If you like to bake cookies, buy this book. You won't be disappointed!

At last! Finally! At last!

The Cooky Book should never, ever, EVER be out of print. It's a classic and belongs on the shelf with The Joy of Cooking. When I was a kid, and everyone was poor, we had a friend who baked cookies every Christmas and showed up with a big box for my sister and me. We thought it was the best present we had ever received and waited with bated breath for each year's box. When The Cooky Book was published, there were our favorite recipes: date bars (by far the best recipe I've ever found), Mexican Wedding Cakes/Russian tea cakes, Chocolate Crinkles, Lemon Squares, Snickerdoodles. . . the list goes on and on and on.
So I've put in my order for the children who now have children of their own. With luck, they may start their own traditions.

One of the greatest History books from my childhood

I can remember picking this book up for the first time from my school library in intermediate school. I was intrigued, this book started my love of ancient history. The information written was clearly written for me to understand even at a young age, but for me the illustrations brought the time period to life in a way no other book had ever done. That is the true brilliance of Peter Connolly, I'm excited to finally own it, and hopefully this book will bring my children a love for history one day.

Great book!

Woozers! I had no idea what was going wrong in my relationships until now! This book highlighted the issues with jealousy and insecurity in a way that is easy to comprehend. I would recommend this book to anyone having jealousy issues with their partner and has no clue why. It sheds light on the connection between jealousy and insecurity and the differences between the way men and women view them. Totally worth the buy!

Root of Jealousy

This book really made me understand the root of some of mine and others bevaiours. Jealousy is not just what everbody things, it is buit upon our insicurities. In fact, the author also gets through all the manifestation of insicurity that we can find in the person we are in love with, things that in my opinion make a relationship become toxic on the long run. The book does also include tips on how to overcome the jealousy symptom and I found them really useful. Recommended book.

Talks about personal experience too much, particularly the author's relationship with her husband, that the book centers on that which makes it boring. Why not tell a story then discuss after. It is helpful though in a way that it helps the reader understand more about insecurities but it becomes boring later on.

Needs more clarity

I got this specifically to help me with a National Science Foundation grant I previously applied for–but flunked. Unfortunately, this book is about as appealing as the grant forms I'm trying to fill out. I am getting the idea that if you want to get a government grant you need to be fluent in bureaucratese. It would have been helpful if conventional jargon could have been printed in color, or gray ink, so we could know which terms were concepts we needed to know to navigate the writing process and which terms were just the author trying his best to communicate.

In short, I need a book that makes the process easier not just rehashing the highly specialized, excessively verbose language of academia. This book succumbs to the same obstacles that defeat you as you attempt to decipher the cryptic minds of bureaucrats.

"Grant Writing For Dummies" by Beverly A. Browning is another great Dummies book that provides the basic nuts and bolts information for writing grants. There's a lot of information that thoroughly covers looking for grants, reading the grant information and application, what information you need to gather together for the grant proposal, how to put it together, and so much more.

Grant writing can be complicated and is definitely an overwhelming process for those new to it. This book breaks it all into little chunks making the whole process easier to understand and make the decision to actually do it. And provides the information in a way that is easy to understand.

This book also guides you as to where to look for more Grant Writing information, guidance, and instruction as well as suggestions on where to look for grants.

It's also a great supplement to any Grant Writing classes or workshops you may have taken or plan to take.

Realistic, a good overview of the process

This is a good book if you are thinking about getting a grant and want an overview of the process. It is well organized and, while it won't give you specifics if you are already in the process of writing. If you are at the beginning of the process, this is a good place to begin because it will give you a cold dose of reality. Unless you are writing for an organization, particularly for a non-profit, you're pretty much out of luck. I liked the realism since so many people think grants are plentiful and easy to get. This disabuses you of that, but shows what to expect if you have the connections to make it likely you will qualify--then what to expect afterwards.

Dear Teacher

Dear Teacher is the fourth book in the series. It covers the fourth year of Jack Sheffield's job as head teacher in a small village school in Yorkshire, England.

Not only the children in the school, but also the village characters that Mr. Sheffield shares his life with, are hilarious. He writes with such wonderful preciseness and colour, that the whole scene is alive, and playing out in your living room.

You will enjoy all four of these books, and look forward to more.

Life in a Village School

Jack Sheffield's well crafted stories of life in a Yorkshire village school have brought back so many fond memories. School dinners, playing conkers, the smell of wet wellington boots.....

I have listened to all of his books on Audio CD and those that Jack has narrated himself have been especially brilliant. He has such a wonderful voice and is so easy to listen to.

Dear Teacher tells of another year with Jack as headmaster of Ragley School. Jack's writing evokes the whole gamut of emotions from tear-shedding sadness through to absolute joy. His characters are larger than life, but oh, so real. Who could not feel enchanted by lisping Jimmy Poole and his pet mouse Petula, or the 'tell it like it is' Heathcliffe Earnshaw who tries to push in to the queue for dinner and says, when told to "go to the back of the line", "but there's already somebody there"! Ruby the school caretaker with her mop and bucket, not to mention her large brood of children and her somewhat lazy husband Ronnie with his ever present 'bobble hat'. Then there's Vera, the school secretary and her brother the Reverend Joseph Evans. School teacher Jo and her new husband, police constable Dan Hunter. All such wonderful characters and Jack's narration of the school year brings them all to life in a poignant yet humourous way.

Sisters, Laura and Beth Henderson, are both vying for Jack's attention and, while Jack seems drawn to Beth initially, he is spending more time with Laura. Which sister will win his affection?

If you want stories that simply entertain you, that make you laugh out loud and reminisce about being a child again, that leave you feeling uplifted with a smile firmly planted on your face, you will love Jack's books.
