About the Author
Susan Singer is the Laurence McKinley Gould Professor of the Natural Sciences in teh dpartment of biology at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she has taught introductory biology, plant biology, genetics, plant development, and developmental genetics for 20 years. Her research interests are focused on the development and evolution of flowering plants. Singer has authored numberous scientific publications on plant development, contributed chapters to developmental biology texts, and is actively involved with teh education efforts of several professional societies. She received the American Society of Plant Biology's Excellence in Teaching Award, serves on teh National Academies Board on Science Education, and chaired the NRC study committee that produced America's Lab Report.

Jonathan Losos is a Monique and Philip Lehner Professor for the Study of Latin America in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Herpetology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. Losos's research has focused on studying patterns of adaptive ratiation and evolutionary diversification in lizards. The recipient of several awards including hte prestigious Theodosius Dobzhansky and David Starr Jordan Prizes for outstanding young evolutionary biologists, Losos has published more than 100 scientific articles.

Kenneth A. Mason received his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Washington, worked at UC Berkeley, then pursued his PhD in Genetics at UC Davis. He has taught Gentics, Microbial Genetics, Microbiology, Advanced Molecular Genetics, Introductory Biology, and a Genetics Laboratory that he designed.

George B. Johnson, Ph.D., is a professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis and a professor of genetics at the university's School of Medicine. He is a prolific author of life science texts and curriculum products in a variety of media. New to his list of works are the Explorations of Human Biology CD-ROM and the textbook Human Biology, both offered by Wm. C. Brown Publishers. Johnson is acknowledged as an authority on population genetics and evolution variability, and he has published more than 50 research papers dealing with these and related topics. Visitors to the St. Louis Zoo can appreciate Johnson's work in the Living World, the educational center of which he is the founding director.

Peter H. Raven, Ph.D., is director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and Engelmann professor of botany at Washington University at St. Louis. He oversees the garden's internationally recognized research program in tropical botany--one of the world's most active in the study and conservation of imperiled tropical habitats. Raven's botanical research and work in the area of tropical conservation have earned him numerous honors and awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship. He has written 17 textbooks and more than 400 articles, and he is a member of th National Academy of Science and the National Research Council.

I am a speech therapist, and I love this workbook! Great exercises for cognitive patients, whether due to brain injury or not! Really like that it comes with a disc, so much easier than copying from the book. Great value, I've paid more for workbooks that I wasn't near as happy with.

About the Author

Dr Gautam Mehta qualified from Southampton University in 2001 and underwent postgraduate training at Hammersmith, Royal Free, St Mary's, and Charing Cross Hospitals. He was the youngest appointee to the North West Thames Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine registrar rotation, and is currently a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at the Institute of Hepatology, University College London.
Gautam is widely published and regularly teaches on MRCP PACES preparation courses. He has an extensive background in medical education, having completed a Fellowship in Medical Education with the London Deanery, and undertaking the Masters in Clinical Education programme at the Institute of Education. Gautam is also an examiner for medical finals at Barts & the London Medical School.
Dr Bilal Iqbal is currently Specialist Registrar in Cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital, London.

Uncovers the beauty of Filipino ancient indigenous ways

Lane Wilcken's book Filipino Tattoos: Ancient to Modern is a result of around two decades of research, connecting with tattoo practitioners, masters and enthusiasts, and is also a result of a lifetime of experiencing Philippine traditions directly for him self via his family.

The book of Filipino Tattoos: Ancient to Modern may cover a significant amount of information that hasn't been published before. It isn't just a book with photos and drawings of traditional and modern tattoos. This book also has a large amount of information about the history of Philippine tattoo culture, the tools and processes of the traditional Philippine practitioners, the different traditional and modern reasons for tattooing, and more.

Both the traditional and modern reasons for tattooing, that are shared in this book can give people who have Filipino tattoos (and/or otherwise) or are planning to get Filipino tattoos, cause to consider more thoughtfully, even contemplatively, what their tattoos mean for them. Even non-Filipino tattoo enthusiasts can get something out of this book.

Wilcken also dedicates a whole chapter to tattooing motifs and practices that are shared among the Pacific Isles. The two forewords are written by Su'a Suluape Alaiva'a Petel, a master tattoo expert who hails from the oldest tattooing family of Samoa, and by Keone Nunes, a Hawaiian master tattoo practitioner(tofuga). The work of Suluape and Nunes has perpetrated the ancient art of hand-tap tattooing today (Bob Baxter, 2010).

(Side story: After this book was off to the press, Nunes and author Wilcken traveled together with friends to the Philippines to meet with the Filipino master tattoo artist Apo Wang-Od, who resides in the mountainous region of Buscalan. You can read about that trip in an email of Nunes to blogger MisterRoadTripper aka Bob Baxter, editor of tattooroadtrip.com. Entitled "Keone Nunes Visits Buscalan," the email relates about the trip, meeting Apo Wang-Od, and the differences and similarities between traditional Philippine and Hawaiian hand-tap tattooing. The email also talks about why it was important for Nune to meet the very old, and thus senior (yet still energetic and lively) Apo Wang-Od, who by the way, is also featured in this book).

Because Christian and Muslim religions deem tattooing as pagan, thus evil, most Philippine people no longer practice this ancient art. What's worse, is that foreign religions not only turned the majority of Filipinos against the practice of tattooing, it also caused their thinking and perceptions to change so much so that Filipinos began looking down on and deeming inferior their fellow Filipinos who still practiced it. Wilcken makes it clear that this tradition is important to uphold and preserve and shares the unseen beauty of the practice. Wilcken is also specific in identifying the northern Philippine regions that still practice tattooing today and is respectful of their regions and identities.

An extraordinary chapter is dedicated to the spiritual aspects of tattooing. This chapter is especially significant because it gives actual examples of different beliefs and rituals that accompany the tattoos. That chapter explains to readers that tattoo motifs were not just a practice to embellish one's physical appearance, but that each motif, pattern and symbol had a deep meaning that imbued its wearer with specific energies, powers, and protection and in that process simultaneously created lasting and sacred connection between the bearer with his/her community, fellows (Kapwa), and with nature or the Divine, during different stages or actions in their life journey (Lakaran).

I think readers, especially westernized Filipinos, by reading this book, can begin to discover and realize that their ancient culture was more artistically sophisticated and esoterically advanced then their colonizers perceived them or how they themselves were taught to perceive themselves by their colonizers.

With Filipino Tattoos: Ancient to Modern, Wilcken balances out our perceptions of this dwindling Filipino tradition. He does a valid and truthful revelation of the beauty and meaning of Filipino tattooing. Wilcken's book uplifts the traditions of tattooing from decorative or supposed superstitious devices of so-called primitives, savages, and from the non-understood fringe movement of new tribalism. The book also enlightens tattoo enthusiasts and mere curious readers, such as myself, to the meaningfulness of the original traditions and even the practices that are persisting today. Wilcken helps the reader find the value and wisdom of ancient and modern Filipino indigenous culture and beliefs. This is an important process that some may identify with the term "decolonization" (for both the colonized and colonizer mind frames).

I want to add, that some of my baybayin and babaylan designs have been taken by others and turned into tattoos on their bodies because the art had deep meaning for them. I met Lane Wilcken recently and began working with him within the Center for Babaylan Studies to research, share, teach, promote indigenous knowledge systems and practices. I know, first hand, that Wilcken has worked on and written this book with the utmost passion for his Philippine roots, and with love and respect for his family and ancestry. He writes in the true spirit of Pakikipagkapwa---Sacred Interconnection with all Life.

This is simply the best and most accurately researched book ever written on Filipino tattoos. Whether you are a person doing research, have a facination with the art form or want to know more about the actual process as it was done by the ancients this is a book for you. I would also reccomend this book to any one thinking getting a tribal or traditional design permanetly on the body. This book goes into the ways one who deserved the honor of displaying a tattoo in their village chose the design and what it meant.
This book will apeal to many people and fills a long awaited void for people seeking knowledge and well researched information into this almost lost ancient art form. I recently was fortunate to hear the author deliver a lecture on this subject of tradition tattooing at the Filipino museum in downtown Los Angeles.
Lane is sincere and passionate in his delivery . This book was twenty years in the making and the content reflects this.

Informative and educational.

As a researcher on the subject, tattoo designer and Sociologist myself - I found the book interesting in that it highlights the relation of Austronesian tattoo patterns, culture and languages among the peoples of the Pacific. It is always a good read for an enthusiast and would serve as a good reference for designs. I would definitely recommend having this in your private library.

Pemberton, a penniless graduate of Oxford, takes a job to tutor Morgan Moreen, aged eleven, a brilliant and somewhat cynical member of a wandering American family. Morgan, who is afflicted with heart trouble, advises Pemberton to escape his family's baleful influence. But Pemberton stays on because he has come to love and admire his pupil and he hopes for at least some eventual payment. Pemberton finally has to take another tutoring job in London simply to make ends meet. He is summoned back to Paris, though, by a telegram from the Moreens that says Morgan has fallen ill. It turns out that Morgan is healthy enough, though the fatal day arrives when his family is evicted from their hotel for nonpayment. Morgan's parents beg Pemberton to take their son away with him while they try to find some money. Morgan is ecstatic at the prospect of leaving with Pemberton, but the tutor hesitates. Morgan suddenly collapses with a heart attack and dies. In the story's ironic final note, James says that Morgan's father takes his son's death with the perfect manner of "a man of the world."

Henry James (1843-1916), American novelist and critic, was an innovator in technique and a distinctive prose stylist. More than any previous writer, James refined the technique of narrating a novel from the point of view of a character, thereby laying the foundations of modern stream-of-consciousness fiction. Henry James Gives us the 'Moreen' Family

The seed of this justly famous novelette came to Henry James in dinner conversation - just the mention of an American born family of upstarts shady and pretentious and traveling Europe like a band of gypsies captured his imagination. The brilliant boy of the family and his tutor become the perfect psychological tools to bring out the situation in all its absurdity. The Moreen family is one of fiction's most delicious creations.

A Compelling Short Story

I have been a fan of Henry James since I read his famous classic horror tale, 'The Turn Of The Screw', and his other fine story, 'The Aspern Papers'. Mr. James has since proven himself to be a very prolific writer with two other great short stories; 'The Beast In The Jungle', and 'The Jolly Corner'. 'The Pupil' is a finely woven story told in 19th century prose about a student/ teacher relationship that grows through the years, and the tension they both feel, as the teacher tries to save the boy from the reality of his dismal family life.

I think it’s a good example of class and how important it was at ...

This is a short story by Henry James, who would fall under Victorian literature, I think. He wrote during that time and, although he was American, he lived in England for a period of time. It revolves around a boy named Morgan and Penmberton, his tutor and the bond that they form as the boy’s affluent yet penniless family. They travel all over the world trying to make money and take care of their family. I think it’s a good example of class and how important it was at the time. Even if you were broke, if you fell into a certain class, you still earned a certain amount of respect from your piers even if you were skipping out on your hotel bills. I had a little bit of a difficult time grasping what James was really trying to say in this story. It seemed kind of pointless and, not to give too much away, kind of sad at the end. Maybe that was the point, that life has no point and bad thing happen to good people and visa-versa. It wasn’t the greatest story I’ve read, but it was food for thought. It’s kind of a quick read and probably free on Kindle. It may be worth for you to check out.
