a beautiful play about family and the long after shocks of the Iraq War

The third play in a trilogy of stories about the Ortiz family of Northern Philadelphia. The first, Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue, was nominated for the Pulitzer in Drama and was about a young Marine's return home after a tour in Iraq in 2003. The second play, Water By the Spoonful, won the Pulitzer in Drama and continued the story about Elliot and introduced Yaz, his older cousin by a decade who teaches music at college.
The Happiest Song Plays Last concludes the tales of Elliot and Yaz. Elliot is now an adviser on a movie about the Iraq War that is being shot in Jordan. He has interesting interactions with his coworkers; he also tries to work through the demons that have been haunting him throughout the trilogy. Yaz has taken up the mantle of her Aunt Ginny as the mother of the local community - she has an urban garden and feeds the poor and homeless.
Reflecting on his time in the Marines, Elliot says: "Cuz that camaraderie? You can't get that in normal life." That is something I have heard from other vets for decades. It partially explains why so many have a hard adjustment to regular American life.
Perhaps the most interesting character is Ali, a Jordanian who is advising the film's director about Iraqi culture. He explains the post-war Iraqi experience in painful, moving detail.
