About the Author
JOHN H. SEINFELD, PHD, is Louis E. Nohl Professor at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Seinfeld is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the American Geophysical Union.

SPYROS N. PANDIS, PHD, is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras, Greece, and EliasResearch Professor of Chemical Engineering and Engineering & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics contains more than you ever want to know about the workings of the atmosphere

I purchased this textbook for a class on Atmospheric Processes. It goes into far more depth than I ever imagined, and you probably wouldn't see half of this material until quite a ways into your graduate degree in atmospheric science. That being said, it is absolutely comprehensive - there probably isn't a single thing you couldn't find somewhere in its pages.

An Exceptional Text book and Example of applied Chemical Engineering

I stumbled on this book at my public library. As a BS Chemical Engineer with 38 years of practice in the petroleum industry (including many years of work on air pollution,) I find this book to be a WONDERFUL CONCISE DIGEST of what it took me many years to try to find out on my own. The writing is clear, the use of Tables and Charts greatly helps in cementing the understanding of complex issues. I know of no other book which has the breadth of scope, the level of detail and the rigid application of good engineering practice to this evolving field.
I only hope that the second edition (2006) is followed up with a third edition to bring us up to date on the remarkable progress made in the past 10 or so years.

Content is great, quality of binding is awful

This is the standard book for any atmospheric chemist. I often use it daily to reference fundamental equations. The biggest problem with this edition of the book is that it falls apart. After having used it for one quarter it began to fall apart and now it is in several pieces. I would expect better from a textbook publisher. Since it is falling apart, it is harder to use. I have several other colleagues with the same problem, however, those that purchased the first edition still have a book that is intact. Consider getting the first edition or writing the publisher to tell them about the poor quality of the second edition binding.

An improbable page-turner, a chilly and alluring novel

I read Enchi's "Masks" nearly ten years ago and knew I wanted to read it again. Having just completed reading Tyler's new translation of The Tale of Genji, I figured it would be a good time to return to it. You don't have to know much about Genji to enjoy Enchi's book -- but it helps. The world she describes is one that is her own: I have sensed characters something like this in other Japanese novelists, but Enchi's characters are really unique: they exist on cultural 'roids, making a deeper impression on one than they should. I'm not convinced that such characters exist in reality, but I do believe that Enchi believes they do.

Enchi uses Genji, Tales of Ise, Noh theater, and a bit of Kojiki as if it were still very much a part of the milleu these 20th century (circa 1958?) characters inhabit. However, instead of a "mythic" structure where the modern characters re-enact the personalities of the past, they are rooted in Enchi's world. The tragedy for many of the characters in the book is not so much that they are doomed to repeat the past, but that they will be doomed to repeat their mistakes in the future. As another reviewer suggested, the book ends with a lot of questions. It is a highly poetic novel without a clear sense of resolution, but it reads remarkably fast and is quite enjoyable. Bound to generate hours of discussion as one tries to look beneath its surface.

Fabulous...

Fumiko Enchi has a remarkable body of work including short stories, novels and a translation of the _Tale of Genji_ from the Classical Japanese to modern (quite a task that legend speaks of her losing her vision partially to accomplish).
This is one of the most amazing novels that I have read. It is about the rage of women and to what extraordinary lengths that vengeance and love can call in a woman and in a manner through all women. The text is imbued with references and imagery from classical literature (Enchi is a classical scholar as was her father) but not knowing the references does not detract from the raw power of the text.
It is a short work and can be a dense read with some of the subtle references but the unmistakable cold anger that runs through it is markedly different from Enchi's other renowned work, _The Waiting Years_. The female characters are more dynamic and the male characters not as reprehensible as in her other works The novel may make some men uncomfortable in reading it since men are a focus of anger and vengeance.
If you are familiar with Japanese literature and symbology the work provides an extra layer of meaning from the bare text. The blurring of real and dream is remiscent of older tale literature and the use of various images such as, Noh masks adds further resonance. There are no footnotes nor explanatory notes so be prepared for that.
It is a pity that not much of Enchi's work has been translated but if you were to choose _Masks_ and the _Waiting Years_ you will not be disappointed.

About the Author

J. Tyler Dickovick is Associate Professor of Politics at Washington and Lee University. He is the author of Decentralization and Recentralization in Developing Countries: Comparative Studies from Africa and Latin America (2011) and has published articles in many journals.

Tremble-Tremble

At first I was skeptical of how I would like this play. You see, our high school is putting this on as their Fall Play. "Fools" will make you "tremble-tremble" with laughter! You'll want to read it by the "light of the drapes". It takes place in the Ukraine when it was still part of Russia in about the 1890's. Every person who was born in the village of Kulyenkitkov (ok, i spelt it wrong, so sue me)is very stupid, not knowing love or the thinking process. In this town you meet many wonderful characters including The Masgetrate who will live to be 80, though he's 79 right now, Yenchna the vendor who milks her cow upside down to get more cream, Slovitch the Butcher who is really quite stupid anyway, Something Something Snetsky who can't remember his own name, Mishkin the Postmaster who gives away people's mail to other people for enjoyment, Count Gregor Yousekevitch who makes the whole town tremble-tremble with fear, Dr. Nickolai Zubritsky who marks his book pages with maple syrup, Mrs. Lenya Zubritsky who set the drapes on fire because she couldn't find her candle, Sophia Zubritsky who is 19 and just recently learned to sit, and finally the new school master, Leon Tolchinsky who has come to break the curse Kulyenkitkov (sorry again, i spelt it wrong!!) How does he brake the (what do you call it? It sounds like nurse or maybe Hearse... OH!) curse? You'll just have to be a sport and read the play yourself...and remember, if you stay in the village long enough, you too will become a FOOL!

A foolish review of a foolish book.

"Fools," by Neil Simon, is one of the more humorous plays I have read in my lifetime. The Russian village of Kulyenchikov, a small, make-believe town is put under a curse, rendering its inhabitants completely stupid. Count Gregor, a name that makes the people of Kulyenchikov tremble in fear, cast this horrible spell. A young school teacher is sent to this town to educate a Sophia, a young, beautiful, and incredibly unintelligent lady of Kulyenchikov. On his way to Sophia's house, Leon meets many of the inhabitants, such as "Something Something Snetsky," and Yenchna the vendor who tries to sell flowers while claiming they are fish. Will Leon be able to teach the unteachable and break the curse of Russian Kulyenchikov? Simon had a lot of fun writing this play, as the readers will have a great time reading it. This play is utterly amusing, even hysterical! I would recommend it to and Neil Simon fans, and to anyone with a sense of humor.

About the Author
Richard Johnson-Sheehan is a Professor of Rhetoric and Composition at Purdue University, where he is the Director of the Purdue Writing Lab. He has also directed the Introductory Composition program (ICaP) and mentored new teachers of composition for many years. He teaches a variety of courses in composition, professional writing, and writing program administration, as well as classical rhetoric and the rhetoric of science. He has published widely in these areas. His books on writing include Writing Today, now in its third edition and co-authored with Charles Paine; Technical Communication Today, now in its fifth edition; and Technical Communication Strategies for Today and Writing Proposals, now in their second editions. Professor Johnson-Sheehan was awarded 2008 Fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and has been an officer in the Council for Writing Program Administrators.

Charles Paine is a Professor of English at the University of New Mexico, where he teaches undergraduate courses in first-year, intermediate, and professional writing as well as graduate courses in writing pedagogy, the history of rhetoric and composition, and other areas. At UNM, he directed the Rhetoric and Writing Program and the First-Year Writing Program. He is an active member of the Council of Writing Program Administrators and currently serves on its Executive Board. He co-founded and coordinates the Consortium for the Study of Writing in College, a joint effort of the National Survey of Student Engagement and the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The Consortium conducts general research into the ways that undergraduate writing can lead to enhanced learning, engagement, and other gains related to student success. He is a co-author with Richard Johnson-Sheehan of Argument Today.

Very useful as a textbook

Most writing textbooks are (ironically) monotonous and dull. "Writing Today," however, is entertaining, easy to read and comprehend, and offers great tips and proper writing practices for a wide range of genres, including blogging and other online publishing platforms. I especially like the sample essays and writings in each chapter illustrating the use of the topic being covered.
