For each diagnosis, the book sets out the typical presentation, options for nonoperative and operative management, and expected outcomes.

Great, but lots of typos

I'm an ortho intern, and I picked up this book for a broad survey of orthopaedics. This book does a great job as an overview, and I feel like it's a perfect way to get introduced to ortho prior to diving into R&G and some of the other heavier books. I've been rather disappointed by the number of typographical errors, though perhaps this is to be expected in a first edition. I was also a little disappointed that 13 of the 50 contributors are residents, but then again, some might see that as a strength. All of the pictures, graphs, and tables are "reprinted with permission" from some other text--I've yet to find a graphic made specifically for this text; in some ways, it feels like the whole text was cut and pasted from other sources. Again, that may not be a bad thing. The text is well-organized and the layout is consistent for all the chapters. Once again, I'm glad I got the book, and I've enjoyed reading it. I wish I had read it during my 4th year of medical school--I feel like it's really helped me to understand the lingo and given me a good introduction to what I'm seeing during my ortho rotations.

The best text instructing the foundations of ortho!

I have purchased at least 10 books on ortho principles and THIS IS THE ONE that made the difference! I am willing to throw all the other books away and use this one alone. Every Ortho PGY1 and ortho Physician Assistant should have this book and read it religiously over the next 2 years.. It's written for those just coming into Ortho and helps to guide you into the language of orthopaedics. It does a good job at teaching principles so that you can apply knowledge to decision making. I strongly recommend this text.

About the Author
RUTH WARINER lives in Portland, Oregon. After Wariner left Colonia LeBaron, the polygamist Mormon colony where she grew up, she moved to California, where she raised her three youngest sisters. After earning her GED, she put herself through college and graduate school, eventually becoming a high school Spanish teacher. She remains close to her siblings and is happily married. The Sound of Gravel is her first book.

A Powerful, Riveting Memoir

I hope that everyone that has experienced a troubled childhood will read this griping and inspiring memoir.

I heard about The Sound of Gravel first on Twitter, when I Tweeted the author, and then later that day found out she is my cousin. Seriously. I was given an Advance Reader Copy and was riveted until I read the last page. Reading Ruth's story was so much like reading about my own life growing up in a violent, polygamist cult. My review is so personal because, even though our lives were separated by the heinous crime my father, Ervil LeBaron had committed against her father, Joel, in 1972, we survived the same type of neglect and deprivation, among other horrors.

Ruth makes the shows, documentaries, news reports and other media you see on television about the fundamentalist Mormons come to life, even as you are wishing nobody ever had to experience such realities.

Thank you, Ruth, for your vulnerability, bravery and courage. I applaud you!

Ruth's story had me spellbound from the first page as ...

Ruth's story had me spellbound from the first page as I followed her every move, totally captivated by this awe inspiring memoir. When I finished the book my heart yearned to know what happened next? It just ended too soon. My heart has been touched in a way a book or story seldom has. Her courage, strength and determination saved lives and it is my humble belief that her story will continue to impact and inspire others to do the right thing.

Amazing story of beauty from ashes

The Sound of Gravel is Ruth Wariner's story of growing up in a polygamous cult. Her father was killed when she was young, and her mother married another polygamous man (as the book says, she was his second second wife). Ruth tells a tale of hardship - they were impoverished, living in squalid conditions, and the children were frequently left to fend for themselves. But there were moments of beauty and joy as well, and it's a remarkable story of perseverance in the most difficult of circumstances. If I hadn't had kids who required my attention and a job that actually wanted me to work, I could have easily read this book in less than 24 hours. It's well told, engaging, and it pulled me right in.

I was provided an advance reader copy for review, but all opinions are my own, and I can't wait to have my very own copy on my shelf.

This book is a great reference for anyone interested in learning JinJungKwan Hapkido or if you are already a Hapkido practitioner in any style of Hapkido wanting to learn additiion techniques. Grandmaster Myung Yong Kim, Founder of JinJungKwan Hapkido is a true man I repect and enjoyed several years practicing JinJungKwan Hapkido under and look forward to the day I'm able to get back to training with.

He was profiled the book Three Sheets to the Wind by leading UK beer expert Pete Brown. This book will open your eyes to the benefits of having a break from alcohol.

If you have ever considered having a break from the demon drink or wondered what it may be like this is the book for you. I found myself agreeing with the author on many occasions about how entrenched alcohol has become in our society but the fact that most people accept it as the norm.

As someone who has had a break from the booze for an extended period (10 months) I can honestly say that this book has inspired me to have another break. As David mentions in the book the clarity that you gain not to mention the health benefits are well worth it.

This book is not designed as a how to type book however it provides an insight as to how wonderful and fulfilling life can be once you give your body the opportunity to function without alcohol.

I also really like the idea of the title. "Between Drinks". I think that by adopting this mindset you are much more likely to succeed staying alcohol free than when I gave up last time saying that "I would never drink again". When you tell yourself you can't have something you want it even more.

I wont give too much away but if David can have a break off the bottle for a while considering his career and also his position in society as a proclaimed beer writer I think anyone can do it.

I take my hat off to you David! I give this book the highest rating possible at 5 stars.

To sum up, this book could quite possibly change your life! That is if you are ready for it. There is a whole new world on "the other side" that most people will never ever see.

Quick read and great book if you are considering (or have) stopped or cutting back drinking. I read during beginning of last year's new year resolutions to stop binge drinking. Only on 6 special occasions (Oktoberfest, Las Vegas, holidays...) days did I have more than 2 drinks. I definitely felt more clearheaded and better mentally/physically. Have shared/recommended book to multiple friends who also enjoyed reading it. Life is now more than just drinking at the bar.

Funny, not preachy, and very inspiring

This was not at all what I expected, and much, much better. Downie doesn't draw the line between alcoholic and sober. For him, it's Drinker vs. Clear Thinker, and that's a powerful distinction for people who want to change their habits but spend too much time berating themselves. His tone is completely encouraging and inviting. A quick, insightful, worthwhile read.

A great sourcebook

Of all the different GURPS books which depict various cultures in our history, this one is my favorite. This book presents the Norsemen in a historical fashion with suggestions and ideas for playing any sort of game. Fans of Beowulf or similar stories will find this invaluable. Also, there is a section on playing less than true historical viking games, such as their magic and creatures of their legends. Over all, a great book.
