Islamist schizophrenia

"Cultural Schizophrenia" Islamic Societies Confronting the West" by Daryush Shayegan (translated from the French by John Howe). (1997) Former professor of comparative philosophy and Indology at Tehran Univ., former director of the Institute for Ismai'li Studies in Paris. Seyyed Hossein Nasr (Prof. Islamic Studies, George Washington Univ.): "He brilliantly sheds new light on a number of issues that have been superficially glossed over in much of the current literature." Given the title of the book, I thought that the book would discuss, well, you know, schizophrenia. I don't recall seeing the word appearing after the third page. I thought that the author would analyze the works of Psychologist A and compare thoughts with those of Psychologist B, C, & D... at least. But, NO. The author provides a couple of paragraphs of thoughts from about 50 or so philosophers, and other thinkers. You know, the usual: Jung, Kant, Nietzsche, Horkheimer, strong on Michel Foucault, a German or two, a Frenchman, some Brits, Chinese, Hindu, even someone from Peru (or was it Paraguay?). The author banters about concepts like the "Hemiplegic Outlook" and "Egocentric consciousness" in trying to bring together some joint-philosophy of modernism, which is alien to the stuck-in-the-mud Islamists. The author wrote: "Other thinkers, such as the Egyptian Abduh, the Syrian al-Kawakibi and the Indian Muhammad Iqbal (1876-1938), explored the themes of backwardness (ta'akhur) and inertia (jumud), opposing them with the ideas of evolution (tatawwur) and progress (taraqqi) acquired from the West. The idea of innovation (bid'a), condemned by Islam as `the worst of things', was re-evaluated; there was even talk of reopening the long-closed door of ijtihad (individual power of decision) [p. 52]. The author concluded: "The [Iranian] mullahs are putting their most unhinged fantasies into effect, giving free rein to their unbridled imagination, whipping the cult of martyrdom from frenzy to paroxysm, reducing timeless myths to their most flatly operational allude: and they are innovating in all directions. They have given concrete form to hallucinatory possibilities that once seethed harmlessly in the formless magma of our collective unconscious" [p. 174]. I believe the author could have condensed this 188-page book down to about 30 pages of relevancy. Not amongst the first books that I would grab to investigate the concept of Islamist schizophrenia.

You'll be surprised!!!

Wow, what a book! I just couldn't stop immediately I picked it up and read the first thing discussed! Many things I felt I knew, jumped right at me in a form I barely recognized them. We think we know many things while in reality, we don't. It's quite an interesting and entertaining book.

The book explains how to use Excel 2013 simply, but fully. I am taking it as a college student for certification - required for accounting majors. After written descriptions of the different ways to use Excel 2013, there are a number of projects that incorporate and allow for the practice of what was just learned. The projects include 2 or 3 different methods to accomplish different tasks in Workbooks/Worksheets. The book is easy to follow and makes it easy to learn Excel 2013.

When my package arrived it was packaged very well. Impressive even. When I opened the package I was disappointed at the condition. I would expect when paying the price for a book of $100.00 and up it should not be a dog eared book. That was a disappointment, I have to iron the book to get the front cover too be straight, and quite a few pages.

I feel if there is any damage at all to the book. The seller should not advertise anything other than good condition. And should not charge top dollar for a book in this condition.

Pleasantly surprised.

52 Sales Management Tips was not what I was expecting. I was, of course, thinking of 200+ pages and a ton of reading to have to find time for. I was up for it, but I'm sure you know how that goes....

I was surprised when I went to highlight something that my Kindle app reported I was already 15% of the way through the book. I looked around and saw what I had gotten: basically all the highlighting already done on the 200+ pager I thought I was going to have to find time for.

Just to be clear -- I was pumped about this.

I have opened up 52 Tips several times when I had a few minutes and buzzed through a dozen of the 52 tips. I take one or two and put them in my daily journal as things to think about. As I work my way through them, I'm sure I will find some things I need to do differently and be reminded the stuff I believe in really does works.

In the end, that's what I want. A book that ignites thought and creativity. That's what I got in a surprising format.

Thanks for a quick, powerful read. It will reside in the Kindle app on my iPhone for years to come.

Inside Gang Life in the 80s

Michael Scott, also known as Rocker, did a great job with this book. Basically, it is a collection of stories about the ups and downs of living the 80s gangbanging life. The book is written in an oral style as if you are hearing the stories told to you over a beer. The true-to-life events are not cliche or predictable.

In Chicago, I was acquaintances with some former gangbangers due to strange circumstances. One was a former TJO, which was a white street gang also of the People Nation that had been strong in the 1970s.

TJO stands for Thorndale Jarvis Organization or Thorndale Jag Offs or Thieves, Junkies and Outlaws. They were riding with the five, but I had a friend who was formerly of the Folk Nation, too. That whole story gets really complicated, really fast-- but the point is that I have been been around some former gangbangers who have done jail time.

I'm from the suburbs and most people don't realize that street culture is such a different culture. The way Rocker writes is true to the street style. The use of similes is especially prevalent because it's a spoken and visual culture. Also the style of "jokes mixed with violence" is seen so often in cheesy action movies, but that same mix is the real deal in the book. It's how people talk and deal with events.

There are spelling and gramatical errors in the book so it could have used a good editor, but my only real complaint is that the ending should have had more detail. The ending events went so fast that I wanted to know more about certain choices that were made.

I would definitely read more books by this author.

Lords of Lawndale

The Gaylords were a predominately White street gang in Chicago that had its beginnings in the 1950's, and Michael Scott tells his story as a member during the early 80's. Chicago, as all major cities in the United States, experienced a dramatic shift in its racial and ethnic makeup during the 20th century. The process of assimilation is not always a smooth one and Lords of Lawndale tells a compelling story of what happens when things go wrong.

It is a violent story of people protecting their neighborhood. Innocence is lost at a young age, as is life itself sometimes. The amount of violence Michael Scott presents is disturbing and it is a sad state of affairs to realize that this is all too common for the young men of Lawndale. For Michael Scott and his fellow Gaylord members violence was what Little Leaugue Baseball was to other boys.

The reader should not worry about the grammar and punctuation mistakes that exist--no armchair sociologist would be willing to do the field research for such a book. This book was written by a warrior of the streets.

For a inside look at the all too common violence of our city streets Lords of Lawdale is a highly recommended read.

I finished Rocker's book last night. I enjoyed it.

By the time that I had reached the middle of the book, I was beginning to notice the large and ever-changing cast of characters, and the relentless repetition of the ongoing fight. But I guess that was the point. At different times, different people came and went, but the same old fight went on and on and on, and if anything, it got worse..

In the end, although the Gaylords put up a good fight, it was finally over - at least in the old neighborhood. Maybe the fight wasn't really won or lost, depending on how you look at it, but there was no denying that it was over.

There were no preachy moral sermons about what happened. The reader is told the story and is then left alone to think about it. Was one side or the other right or wrong? Was it all worth it? Maybe, as the saying goes, "You had to be there". The book takes us there, for a while.

I was impressed by Rocker's ability to recall what happened in such detail. I doubt that he took an hour or two off each day, to write about things as they were happening. He probably wrote about it at some later time. Perhaps he was able to recapture some of the facts by interviewing others.

Even though there are some imperfections here and there, it is an impressive book. So it isn't a grammar manual. It's imperfections give it an air of authenticity. After all, who would expect that a bunch of street fighters would always use flawless English?

The book is a job well done - especially considering that it is an author's first effort.

Cool heads will prevail

This is a sweet book and Thomas Basso is a very friendly writer. His wisdom will help you counteract a most vexatious flaw of human nature, ie getting overfocused and overcommitted to a particular opinion. He gives ways of taking possible alternate viewpoints on a situation so that you can generate a balanced psychology. The benefit is flexibility of action. Helps avoid sticking with losing propositions and helps you move into winning ones. I dont think anyone could lose by getting acquainted with his thoughts. Good man. Thanks Tom.

Liked Schwager interview better ; here is why i did buy

Most of book is very , very basic;

but I figured the Schwager interview was so helpful,

couldnt lose much. William Eng books give better bang for buck.

Its a keeper for me because of;

Info in [a]Chapter on ''Beware of the 10 year track record'',

[z]Solomon like comparison cartoon in ''Beware of the 10 year track record''.

About the Author
Campbell R. McConnell earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa after receiving degrees from Cornell College and the University of Illinois. He taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1953 until his retirement in 1990. He is also coauthor of Contemporary Labor Economics, Seventh edition, and Essentials of Economics, First edition (both The McGraw-Hill Companies), and has edited readers for the principles and labor economics courses. He is a recipient of both the University of Nebraska Distinguished Teaching Award and the James A. Lake Academic Freedom Award, and is past-president of the Midwest Economics Association. Professor McConnell was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Cornell College in 1973 and received its Distinguished Achievement Award in 1994.

Stanley L. Brue did his undergraduate work at Augustana College (South Dakota) and received its Distinguished Achievement Award in 1991. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. He is a professor at Pacific Lutheran University, where he has been honored as a recipient of the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award. Professor Brue has also received the national Leavey Award for excellence in economic education. He has served as national president and chair of the Board of Trustees of Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics Honorary. He is coauthor of Economic Scenes, Fifth edition (Prentice-Hall), Contemporary Labor Economics, Seventh edition, Essentials of Economics, First edition (both The McGraw-Hill Companies), and The Evolution of Economic Thought, Seventh edition (South-Western).

Sean is an assistant professor of economics at Scripps College in Claremont, California. He is the author of the international best seller "Economics for Dummies" as well as the coauthor, along with Campbell McConnell and Stanley Brue, of the world's best-selling college economics textbook, "Economics: Principles, Problems, and Policies."
An avid martial artist, Sean is a former Aikido national champion and has coached five of his students to U.S. national aikido titles.

Working in evocative monochrome or carefully articulated color, he collaborates regularly with the world’s top supermodels and designers, and has photographed for many leading fashion magazines and international ad campaigns.

Little pearl

I recently discover the work of Roversi, and I wanted have a book of him, I purchased this one because is cheap, and I discover that the good things sometimes came in the simple ones. I love this little book, the pictures are so beautiful and it seems like there's a story in the pictures, and I feel like Roversi is telling the story of his career in few pages and showing a bit of his technical skills and the majesty of his portraits.

Bought this sort of as an afterthought a while back. Excellent portraits. Excellent book. I hadn't seen much work by Roversi previous to this. If you are thinking about buying it and want to look at a good selection of his work, type in Roversi in Google Images. The book is very well worth the eleven bucks or so it cost.

I really love the work of Paolo Roversi. And if you looking for a little tiny book, to get the outstanding photographs of his very expensive Book "The Studio": Go for it!
