About the Author

Timothy J. Rupert

Timothy J. Rupert is a Professor and the Golemme Administrative Chair at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. He received his B.S. in Accounting and his Master of Taxation from the University of Akron. He also earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University. Professor Rupert’s research has been published in such journals as The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Advances in Taxation, Applied Cognitive Psychology, Advances in Accounting Education, and Journal of Accounting Education.

He currently is the co-editor of Advances in Accounting Education. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Massachusetts Society of CPAs. He also has received the University’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the D’Amore-McKim School’s Best Teacher of the Year award multiple times. He is active in the American Accounting Association and the American Taxation Association (ATA) and has served as president, vice president, and secretary of the ATA.

Thomas R. Pope

Thomas R. Pope is the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting at the University of Kentucky. He received a B.S. from the University of Louisville and an M.S. and D.B.A. in business administration from the University of Kentucky. He teaches international taxation, partnership and S corporation taxation, tax research and policy, and introductory taxation and has won outstanding teaching awards at the University, College, and School of Accountancy levels. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, the Tax Adviser, Taxes, Tax Notes, and a number of other journals. Professor Pope’s extensive professional experience includes eight years with Big Four accounting firms. Five of those years were with Ernst & Whinney (now part of Ernst & Young), including two years with their National Tax Department in Washington, D.C. He subsequently held the position of Senior Manager in charge of the Tax Department in Lexington, Kentucky. Professor Pope also has been a leader and speaker at professional tax conferences all over the United States and is active as a tax consultant.

Kenneth E. Anderson

Kenneth E. Anderson is the Pugh CPAs Professor of Accounting at the University of Tennessee. He earned a B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee and subsequently attained the level of tax manager with Arthur Young (now part of Ernst & Young). He then earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University. He teaches corporate taxation, partnership taxation, and tax strategy. Professor Anderson also is the Director of the Master of Accountancy Program. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, Advances in Taxation, the Journal of Accountancy, the Journal of Financial Service Professionals, and a number of other journals.

Pretty unhappy with the product. I bought it for $280 for a NEW copy and it came without the attached code. The product was not listed as new without code it was just listed as new so it should have had the accompanied code that now has cost me $80 for my it lab.

This is a terrible text book

This is a terrible text book. Our professor even complains about how bad the book is. However it's one of the few that can be purchased in Canada. Complicated items are not explained in a simple manner showing that the authors have a lack of understanding or lack of connection with users. It is boring, adds very little value, and riddled with errors. If your goal is to learn more about tax and you don't need this book for a class then it would be better just to go to the IRS website and read the tax code or use google searches rather than buy this book. This book appears to exist for the sole purpose of Pearson offering a US tax book and so that a university class technically has a text book associated with it.

The Mathematics of History

The author of a text on the history of mathematics is faced with a difficult question: how to handle the mathematics? There are several good choices. One is to give concise descriptions of the mathematics, which allows many topics to be covered. Another is to present the mathematics in modern terms, which makes clear the connection between the past and the present. There are many excellent texts that use either or both of these strategies.

This book offers a third choice, based on a simple philosophy: the best way to understand history is to experience it. To understand why mathematics developed the way it did, why certain discoveries were made and others missed, and why a mathematician chose a particular line of investigation, we should use the tools they used, see mathematics as they saw it, and above all think about mathematics as they did.

Thus to provide the best understanding of the history of mathematics, this book is a mathematics text, first and foremost. The diligent reader will be classmate to Archimedes, al Khwarizmi, and Gauss. He or she will be looking over Newton's shoulders as he discovers the binomial theorem, and will read Euler's latest discoveries in number theory as they arrive from St. Petersburg. Above all, the reader will experience the mathematical creative process firsthand to answer the key question of the history of mathematics: how is mathematics created?

In this text I have emphasized:

Numeration, computation, and notation. Notation both limits and guides. Limits, because it is difficult to think "outside the notation"; guides, because a good system of notation can suggest relationships worthy of further study. As much as possible, I avoid the temptation to "translate" a mathematical result into modern (mathematical) language or notation, for modern notation brings modern ways of thinking. In a similar vein, the means of computing and expressing numbers guides what discoveries one may make, and ultimately influences the direction taken by mathematicians.

Mathematical results in their original form with their original arguments. The most dramatic change in mathematics over the past four millennia has been the standard of proof. What was acceptable to Pythagoras is no longer be acceptable today. The binomial theorem was, when Newton proposed it, nothing more than a conjecture, and while most of Euler's results on series summation are accepted today, his methods are not. But to provide a modern proof of a result would be historically inaccurate, while to omit how the these results were supported would be to neglect a vital part of the history of mathematics. To protect modern sensibilities, I will distinguish between proofs, where the term is used in the modern sense, and demonstrations, which contain some elements no longer acceptable in a modern context, and if a non-obvious result is presented without a proof, it will be labeled a conjecture.

Mathematics as an evolving science. The most important thing we can learn from a history of mathematics is that mathematics is created by human beings and not by semimythical demigods. The ideas of Newton, Euler, Gauss, and others originated from the mathematics they knew and the problems they saw around them; they made great contributions, but they also made mistakes, which were faithfully replicated (or caustically reviewed) by fellow mathematicians. Finally, no mathematical idea is born, fully mature and in the modern form: we will follow, where space and time permit, the development of mathematical ideas; through their birth pains, their early, formative years, and onwards to their early maturity and final, modern form.

To fully enter into all of the above for all of mathematics would take a much larger book, or even a mufti-volume series: a project for another day. Thus, to keep the book to manageable length, I have restricted its scope to what I deem "elementary" mathematics: the fundamental mathematics every mathematics major and every mathematics teacher should know. This includes numeration, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, calculus, real analysis, and the elementary aspects of abstract algebra, probability, statistics, number theory, complex analysis, differential equations, and some other topics that can be introduced easily as a direct application of these "elementary" topics. Advanced topics that would be incomprehensible without a long explanation have been omitted, as have been some very interesting topics which, through cultural and historical circumstances, had no discernible impact on the development of modern mathematics.

Using this book

I believe a history of mathematics class can be a great "leveler", in that no student is inherently better prepared for it than any other. By selecting sections carefully, this book can be used for students with any level of background, from the most basic to the most advanced. However, it is geared towards students who have had calculus. In general, a year of calculus and proficiency in elementary algebra should be sufficient for all but the most advanced sections of the present work. A second year of calculus, where the student becomes more familiar and comfortable with differential equations and linear algebra, would be helpful for the more advanced sections (but of course, these can be omitted). Some of the sections require some familiarity with abstract algebra, as would be obtained by an introductory undergraduate course in the subject. A few of the problems require critiques of proofs by modern standards, which would require some knowledge of what those standards are (this would be dealt with in an introductory analysis course).

There is more than enough material in this book for a one-year course covering the full history of mathematics. For shorter courses, some choices are necessary. This book was written with two particular themes in mind, either of whEch are suitable for students who have had at least one year of calculus:

1. Creating mathematics: a study of the mathematical creative process. This is embodied throughout the work, but the following sections form a relatively self-contained sequence: 3.2, 6.4.1, 9.1.5, 9.2.3, 11.6, 13.1.2, 13.4.1, 13.6.1, 17.2.2, 20.2.4, 20.3.1, 22.4.

2. Origins: why mathematics is done the way it is done. Again, this is embodied throughout the work, but some of the more important ideas can be found in the following sections: 3.2, 4.3.1, 5.1, 6.1.2, 9.2.3, 9.4.5, 13.6.1, 15.1, 15.2, 19.5.2, 20.1, 20.2.5, 22.1, 23.3.2

In addition, there are the more traditional themes:

3. Computation and Numeration: For students with little to no background beyond elementary mathematics, or for those who intend to teach elementary mathematics, the following sections are particularly relevant: 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.1, 7.1, 8.1, 8.3.1, 8.3.2, 9.1, 10.1.2 through 10.1.4, 10.2.1, 10.2.6, and 11.4.1.

4. Problem Solving: In the interests of avoiding anachronisms, these sections are not labeled "algebra" until the Islamic era. For students with no calculus background, but a sufficiently good background in elementary algebra, the following sequence is suggested: Sections 1.3, 2.2, 5.4, 7.4, 8.2, 8.3, 9.2, 9.3, 10.2.2, 10.3.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.5.1, and for the more advanced students, Chapter 16.

5. Calculus to Newton and Leibniz: The history of integral calculus can be traced through Sections 1.4.2, 4.2, 4.3.3, 4.3.4, 5.6, 5.9, 6.1, 6.3, 10.4, 11.4.3, 12.4, 12.3.2, 13.1.2, 13.2, and 13.4.2. Meanwhile, the history of differential calculus can be traced through Sections 5.5.2, 6.6.2, 12.1.1, 13.3, 13.5, 13.6.

6. Number theory: I would suggest Sections 3.2, 5.8, 7.4, 8.3.5, 8.3.6, 10.2.5, 12.2, and all of Chapter 17.

Of Historic Interest Only

This is a very bad book, but one very much worth reading, at least for Rex Stout fans. It was written at the beginning of his career, when he was much under the influence of the adventure writers like Rider Haggard and Arthur Conan Doyle. It features all the outlandish elements of those books (beautiful women, romantic heroes, exotic locales, alien races), but much less deftly handled.
It is no surprise that after this fiasco, Stout took a long break before coming back with Fer de Lance, the first Nero Wolfe novels. Even then, he had not truly lost the brash, unsophisitcatd voice found in Under the Andes.
Don't read this book looking for a great plot, or nuanced characterization, or for the humor you will find in the Wolfe books. But if you love those books as I do, you might want to see how their author got to where he could write them.

Crude and monotonous early adventure novel by Rex Stout

This reviewer loves Stout's sublime Nero Wolfe mysteries, and also the testosterone-fueled pulp adventure novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur Conan Doyle, and their contemporaries. Unfortunately, Under the Andes, a very early outing by Stout, is almost embarassingly bad. It lacks the situational humor and subtle characterization that give the Nero Wolfe novels their timeless appeal, and it's not creative enough in its situations or plot to succeed as an adventure novel.

The story is told from the first-person point of view; it involves the aristocratic hero, his younger brother, and a supremely desirable female who is reminiscent of Princess Dejah Thoris in Burroughs' John Carter books. What little plot there is centers around a series of adventures and escapes, literally Under the Andes. Here, the hero is as arrogant and abrasive as Nero Wolfe, but Stout hadn't yet discovered the secret of successfully portraying this type of protagonist, which is to look at him through a third person who can gently poke fun at him while still admiring him. Let's face it, if we had seen the world through Nero Wolfe's eyes instead of Archie Goodwin's, who among us wouldn't have been rooting for the bad guy to get away every time? It's tough to even tolerate, let alone sympathize with, two of the three main characters; only the hero's younger brother is likable in his naive bravery.

When compared to its adventure-novel contemporaries, this book doesn't have much going for it. It doesn't have humor, characters you can like, or subtlety (read even the first chapter of The Lost World by Conan Doyle for comparison); and it doesn't have the straightforward-yet-immensely-profound life perspective of Burroughs' early Tarzan books.

However, if you're an aspiring writer, give this a read; you'll see how even the great writers have to start somewhere. The book isn't really abysmally bad; it's just abysmally bad compared to what it could have been if written by a more mature Rex Stout.

For True Stout Fans-- all others avoid

This earnest adventure novel reads like a silly pulp written by someone with only half the smarts of the man who created Nero Wolfe. Of course, Stout fans (and I am one) love the brilliant Nero Wolfe novels with an irrational passion-- they're truly fine reading and seem just as fresh to day as when they were written 70 or 60 or 50 years ago. That said, this very early novel by Stout is a stolid attempt at a cliffhanger-- once the caverns under the Andes are reached, the narrative becomes repetitive as escape follows escape follows escape from the evil denizens of the deep. Only true fans of Stout will be even remotely amused by this early work-- luckily, he learned a lot in the 20 years that followed this exercise, and the first Nero Wolfe was as good as the last. The book arrived on time and in good condition. It's great for beginners-intermediates because it has the tune and the fingerings below each note. It doesn't go into detail about technique or anything-this is strictly a tune book. I would recommend it.

Excellent for a beginner like me. There's a CD so you can listen to all the tunes first, and the songs are grouped in order of difficulty from easy to hard. On the early songs there are pictures that show you how to finger each note too.

Everyone Loves a Good Story...

And you certainly won't be disappointed with this one. I found myself feeling like I was in ancient times reacting to the storyteller. There is something about Frank Delaney's writing that mesmerizes me at the get-go. I wanted to like the Druid as a wise and worldly, little man, but his means of getting Elaine were horribly dishonest. In the end he is caught in his own falsehoods. What one will do to "get the girl ." The question here is: Did he love the girl or did he love what came with the girl? Read this short story for you shall see. Imagine you are sitting around a hearth-fire, in an Irish cottage or a pub in Ireland listening to the storyteller. Frank Delaney is brilliant in his creative abilities, and with prose that will have you asking for more.

I recommend this quick escape to a great short story. Worth the read. Can't wait for his next short story.

The Druid - A Mysterious Matchmaker!

Frank Delaney begins this story with a preface about the well-known Bards of Ireland, their various names, their powers, political connections, place in the community, and their wonderful story-telling abilities. Frank Delaney here continues the tradition in this series of short stories, the first being "The Druid"!

This is a truly magical story about a crazy Druid who also knew how to manipulate the people he served with his powers. It's such a short story and not to be ruined by telling too much about it. It contains the proverbial phrases and comments that helped expand a bard's story, but most of all it tells of how much the common Irish farmers trusted the Druid with their present and future, even down to the focus of this story, the possible wedding of a beautiful daughter to one known and one unknown suitor! Every utterance of advice was honored as if it came from the divine!

The Druid is an annoying but funny guy whose end will delight every reader! Frank Delaney is a true Bard sharing his love of fable, legend and stories in the 21st Century, and readers are privileged to enjoy every literate story and novel he writes. Lovely!

This is a typical Frank Delaney book. And in saying that, i am saying it is wonderful!! In addition to this series i highly recommend Ireland, The Story Teller and Tipperary.
